Egyptian God 'Osiris' Illuminates 'New World' Asteroid

(National Geographic) Scientists are likening new images from a large asteroid to ‘discovery of a new world.’

The 21 Lutetia asteroid is located between Jupiter and Mars, and the European Space Agency’s probe “Rosetta” passed within about 2,000 miles of it, snapping pictures as it whizzed by.

SOUNDBITE: Holger Sierks, ESA OSIRIS Principal Investigator, Max Planck Institute for Solary System Research:“We discovered tonight a new world. It’s the largest asteroid ever seen by a human, and it ‘s really, really exciting. It’s so cool!”

Only observed before by ground-based telescopes, astronomers and graphic artists have imaged its shape, and no one is sure of what it’s made of, or its origin.

Osiris, lord of the dead. His green skin symbolizes re-birth. God of the afterlife

OSIRIS (Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System) is a wide-angle camera and a narrow-angle camera to obtain high-resolution images of the comet’s nucleus and the asteroids that Rosetta passes on its voyage to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. It will help in identifying the best landing sites.

The Sun Wakes Up/
M-Class Flare Heading Our Way

by Mitch Battros - Earth Changes Media

Sunspot regions 1092, 1093, 1094 and 1095 are throwing a series of C-class flares and one M-class. Sunspot region 1095 poses the greatest threat as it appears to be Earth directed.

Equation: Sunspots => Solar Flares (charged particles) => Magnetic Field Shift => Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents => Extreme Weather and Human Disruption (mitch battros)

After the initial wave which will hit sometime tomorrow, watch for following extreme weather within the next 48 to 72 hours. Most notable, would be the escalation of current tropical storms turning into hurricanes. Also watch for an increase in earthquake and volcanic activity.

This event would usually not be of note, but since Cycle 24's activity has been mild, it is expected to see the solar-physicist community start to get excited. This could be the late beginning of a gradual ramping up to Cycle 24's apex which will occur in late 2012.

SOLAR BLAST JUST MISSES EARTH: On Saturday, August 7th, magnetic fields around sunspot 1093 erupted. NASA spacecraft and many amateur astronomers photographed the blast, which produced a strong M1-class solar flare and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space--apparently just missing the sun-Earth line. The explosion also made whooshing sounds in the loudspeakers of some shortwave radios. Visit http://spaceweather .com for audio recordings and movies of this latest solar event.

AURORA RECAP: Last week's geomagnetic storm sparked Northern Lights as far south as Iowa in the United States, and some nice Southern Lights over Antarctica. For the latest images, start browsing here: http://www.spacewea ther.com/ aurora/gallery_ 01aug10_page4. htm
