Carroll's Iowa Army National Guard unit has been activated to assist in next week's inauguration proceedings for Barack Obama.
Fifty-five members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry will be among 1,000 soldiers and airmen from Iowa assisting federal, state and local agencies in Washington, D.C.
Alpha Company was conducting a routine four-day drill when the National Guard Bureau issued the mobilization request Friday, according to Sgt. Mike Kots, readiness NCO. Kots said the troops were given leave today and Tuesday and are to report Wednesday for the approximately 10-day mission.
Iowa is activating every unit in the Army Guard's 2nd Brigade Combat Team plus airmen from the Air Guard's 132nd Fighter and 185th Air Refueling wings.
Forty soldiers from the 1-168's Delta Company at Denison, which returned home in May from a 10-month deployment to Iraq, are being activated for the D.C. mission.

Municipalities continue to be upset with Ohio Supreme Court over gun rights
By Tim InwoodAn old friend of mine, who is on the city council in my hometown, has given me the February 2009 copy of Risky Business, a newsletter put out by the Miami Valley Risk Management Association. He was concerned over comments made on the second page.
Though the article is subtle, it is clearly an advocacy piece about a ruling with which they are unhappy. MVRMA seems to be bothered that the Ohio Supreme Court found for the citizens of Ohio in their desire to exercise their right to keep arms for self-defense, and not for home rule by the cities. They specifically cite the lawsuit against the city of Clyde, and the ruling rendered on September 18, 2008. The 4-3 decision held the city's ordinance barring licensed gun owners from carrying their handguns in city parks was unconstitutional, as it is an "exercise of municipality's police power that conflicts with a general law."

In this morning's edition of the Shooting Wire, Jim Shepherd writes that Canadian officials have it on "good authority" our State Department may be on the verge of cutting off all imports of certain calibers of ammunition.
Ammos listed for this rumored ban include the .50BMG, 7.62x39mm Soviet, 7.62x51mm NATO, .308 Winchester, 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. Additionally, we're hearing that an expansion of this proposed ban might be broadened to include the 6.8mm SPC, 9mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP- among others.Shepherd continues that there may also be a plan to ban exports on certain firearms to Canada from the US, resulting in the State Department hammering gun manufacturers, distributors and exporters in the United States while simultaneously making firearms -and ammunition - ownership and acquisition more difficult for Canadians.
In other words, State Department officials may be floating a trial balloon to see if there are howls of protest, or whimpers of compliance. Canadian elected officials who have directed this information to me say the move seems to be motivated by "emboldened" anti-gun officials who think they have a kindred spirit in President Obama.
Many in the pro-rights community have said since the election that Obama could circumvent Congress by using regulations in his various cabinet departments to attack gun owners. It appears that it may have already begun.

The 2009 $1.125 Trillion Stimulus project is supposed to create three million
jobs.
OK that’s at a cost of $275,000.00 per job created.
We are, as you read entering the greatest social engineering effort of American
culture and civilization in the brief 200-year history of this nation. If you
thought that the communist Franklin Delano Roosevelt brought great change in the
political structure of our nation or that socialist Lyndon Banes Johnson was a
socialist upstart, I caution you to withhold your opinion until the next four
years are over.
Barry Soetoro-Hussein Obama whose citizenship is in dire question, will make the
aforementioned social engineers seem like that of passive doves. Obama and the
DNC have spent well over $80,000. in stifling one after another-legal demands
(over 30) for him to prove his citizenship. This has even included the Supreme
Court, when he had a secret meeting with eight of the judges (1) for one and a
half hours.
The submitted Hawaii birth certificate was produced under Hawaii statute 338
that allows foreign born children of Hawaii residents to obtain a Hawaii birth
certificate.
No Hawaii hospital has produced any actual record of Obama’s birth.
His mother was Hawaiian which at that time was not a state, and had not reached
the age of majority, and his father was Kenyan, and thus a British subject,
because Kenya was in the British Commonwealth.
The requirement of obtaining such an after-the-fact birth certificate is the
affidavit of only one relative.
There exists any number of affidavits claiming his birth in Kenya.
Furthermore Obama immigrated to Indonesia as a child with his mother and
stepfather Lolo Soetoro.
Indonesian records indicate that his legal name was Barry Soetoro, and he was a
citizen of Indonesia, which does not allow dual nationality, thus his mother had
denounced her American citizenship.
Further evidence indicates that Obama traveled with his Indonesian passport up
until the time he became an U. S. Senator.
Not since the 4th century in Europe under the Holy Roman Emperor or in the later
20th century in Russia with Putin (2) has government and religion become a
conjoined enterprise in the Western World.
Obama has changed that in America, our conjoined partner however is not religion
it is socialism, or as now more commonly by democrats called progressive
democracy.
To give you an understanding of the magnitude of this change, the proposed
coming stimulus package (Passed by the House on Jan. 28.09) which is to be $825
billion, but that caries with it an additional $ 300 to $350 billion in interest
paments (3) of that total amount it has been estimated that 2.7% are for the
formation of new jobs for Americans.
This spending binge of 647 pages of legislation is to be passed by congress by
February 2009. That is not even enough time to read the monstrosity.
This is not change it is exactly what we had under Bush for the Patriot Act,
Homeland Security legislation, and the first $700 billion (4) of stimulus that
did exactly nothing except bail out Banksters who then used the funds to go on
vacations, buy jets, visit spas in California, go to Scotland to play golf, and
buy more political favors.
Worse yet, the Democrats shut out all Independents and Republicans from the
structural discussions of what and how the stimulus package was to be made up.
And just so you understand this perfectly well, during the time of this Democrat
only debate, America lost another 72,000 jobs mostly in manufacturing
industries.
On January 26, America lost another 55,000 jobs the greatest recorded job loss
on one day in American history, and in 2008 we lost a total of 2.5 million jobs.
We hope that you understand that we are now in a depression.
The entire presently structured national bailout is nothing but more government
and more debt. And then to make matters worse, Obama has demanded the citizens
who have not paid taxes in the last quarter be included in the stimulus package
with a stimulus check.
A further examination of the stimulus package that Obama has repeatedly stated
must be passed immediately indicates that only 55% of funds will be used in the
first 18 months and that 75% of the balance will be used over the following
three to four years.
Apparently the only rush is passing the legislation to allow the Obama
administration to begin their social engineering of the American landscape.
One can only imagine why banksters and Wall Street spent $3.3 billion on
lobbying congress and the presidential candidates in 2008 with 15,000 lobbyists.
America has the second highest corporate tax rate in the world, it would make a
hell of a lot more sense to cut that tax rate to stimulate the economy rather
than the societal engineering the progressives are sponsoring.
TARP (5) is the 2008 legislation that provided to the US Treasury a cash outlay
of $750 billion about two thirds of which has been given to friends and
associates of Mr. Hank Paulson as well as by December of last year 117 banks.
The odd thing about this is that no one has any remote idea of who got the money
and what they did with it. When borrowed funds are counted with the initial
amount it exceeds one trillion dollars, and there is no accountability by anyone
for anything.
Today there are over 200 banks and still no one knows anything! Not one of these
bums has gone to jail, been arrested or been charged with anything. Worse yet
all the gonif’s and “Ponzigoniff “ who created this mess in the first place are
now in charge of fixing the problems. Talk about the fox guarding the chicken
coop!
As usual the media is right in the center of the entire cabal. By a margin of
78%, the media supported the Obama candidacy. According to reliable statistics
seven out of ten media employed people voted for Obama.
Our local Fishwrap here in Sarasota Florida, had no less than six editorials
supporting Obama and for the last week before the election ran a repeat
endorsement every single day. If we transfer these numbers to the Stimulus
package we can conclude that the media supports these bailouts by a margin of
nine to one. Considering the financial strait of such stalwarts as the “Grey
Lady” (6) among others we are hardly surprised.
One of the prime social engineering projects of the Obama administration will be
EFCA (7).
EFCA is the worst most undemocratic idea ever to come down the pike.
In a nutshell it would allow unions to forego a secret ballot in unionizing a
place of work and simply get 50% plus one employee to sign a union card and then
by force unionize the entire establishment, forcing 49% of the undeclared
workers to join the union and pay its dues.
This gets us right into a 10th amendment issue (8) in that such a law is in
violation of the Bill of Rights, infringes on state rights and would overturn
right to work laws in fourteen of the states. Worse yet if enacted it will make
America internationally uncompetitive and further erode our export markets,
drive up prices of what little domestic manufacture still exists, and be a huge
additional drag on the economic recovery.
Let us be clear as a bell’s pitch. We are entering the era of group politics.
Group politics will be the standard procedure for at least the coming two years.
And be assured that neither in our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Federalist
Papers nor in any single founding document is there any group rights granted to
any group. Group rights are the preview of communism, as they have always been.
With partisan progressives like Obama, Reid and Pelosi there can be no other
outcome, especially with the progressive wing of the democrat party in full
control of the legislative as well as executive branches of government. Lest we
forget all constitutional and Bill of Rights granted rights are to the States
and to individuals, not one is to a social, religious, racial, sexual or any
other group.
One of the objectives of the progressives is to pass the GPA (Global Poverty Act

Development Goals www.un.org/millenniumgoals . This horrific idea is that the
United States along with the developed world must fund all third world economies
to reduce poverty. This group effort is based on the false idea that the
developed world is developed due to luck, and happenstance, not work and effort
and application of knowledge, and that people who are pitiable are poor because
of a quirk in nature, climate, and history. That’s just plain stupid. The third
world exists in poverty because the people living there do not apply themselves
to their problems do not educate themselves, and in many cases are lazy. This
legislation if passed by congress and made law would require America to increase
foreign aid from the present $ 23 billion to $98 billion annually. As we are
broke, this is not an option.
We anticipate huge increases in all sorts of group rights for any and all
minorities, not only in financial terms, but also in social ones. Social group
rights will cause the expansion of racial disharmony, and racism will be its
product. This has already shown up with the Obama administration appointing more
Jews than any other group to executive positions nationally considering that
Jews are about 3% of the population and now are over 70% of executive positions
and hold 45 legislative offices one can only wonder what’s next?
With this will come another legislative boondoggle, Hate Laws, that have been
demanded by the JDL, SPLC, WZF, (9) for years. This then again, pits the
administration and legislature against the First amendment of the Constitution,
the Bill of Rights, which has always been an anathema to Zionists. The Zionists
have long understood that only through the application of law are you able to
support the holocaust pipe dream. Truth in fact does not require law as a pit
bull to enforce its position.
The fact of the matter being that as such social legislative actions are brought
to the forefront and possibly is enacted that it will have a deleterious effect
on the economy and will, if God willing we had an economic recovery destroy it.
A basic point of our position is that we distrust Obama for more than one
reason, and suspect that he will fulfill the Bush enacted executive positions to
solidify his grasp of society. The fact that the mob is behind Obama is
frightening consider the words of Seneca about mob rule

election in American history; the radical enactments of the progressives will
prove us correct within six months.
Anyone who actually believes that these stimulus packages relate to the economy
must be comatose. All these efforts relate to changing our social structure,
elimination our long-standing constitutional freedoms, centralization of power
in Washington, and group rights for all the minority groups that have
historically supported the socialist (Progressive) Democrats. Identifying these
culprits is simple as pie. Feminists, Environmentalists, Unionists, Homosexuals,
Hispanics, Blacks, Jews, and Zionists, are those groups that most actively
supported Obama, and they are the ones who will demand payback.
Returning to the 2008 stimulus package, we see that out of the first $355
billion of appropriated funds by Congress the COB (Congressional Budget
Office`www.cbo.gov) estimated that only $26 billion will be spent in 2009 and
that only $110 billion in 2010. So with all, that urgency “you must pass this
legislation or the sky will fall” (G.W. Bush) was as usual more Bushbunk. In
fact all the proposals to place monies into circulation and to stimulate
consumer confidence and consumer purchasing has proven to be a very effective
smoke screen to keep the electorate from learning exactly what the plan is. A
rough breakdown of the entire plan is $143 billion for education, $111 Billion
for healthcare, $90 Billion for infrastructure, $72 billion for the aged, and
disabled, $54 billion for energy revitalization, and $60 billion for science and
technology. We must be the only people on the planet, who can’t locate any
relief for the middle class, help for small business, reform of the delete
rious effects of free trade, but then we have it straight from the horses mouth,
Nancy Pelosi, who said, “Contraception is a source of economic stimulus”. This
would only be the case if her mother had rigorously employed it!
Education issues relating to the faux quality of American education, scenario is
to get $ 143 billion. This in effect would triple federal spending on education.
One can suppose that this is payback for the AFT and NEA (10) unilateral support
of Obama and the Democrats in the 2008 election. In truth these two unions (The
largest in America) are the culprits responsible for the dumbing down of America
and the lagging international record of academic standards. Always opposed to
teacher competency testing, magnet schools, means testing, and anything that
would actually work in improving education standards in America, they are
certainly one of the concerns in our continuously declining international
student standings. The concept of a nationalized education system stems from
Prussia and is basically un-American.
Another leftist Democrat Jimmy, the Twit, Carter in 1979, started the US
Department of Education. Ever since 1979 education in America has gone downhill.
From about 7th in international ratings we are now in the 30’s. To further
improve this situation Mr. Obama has appointed Arme Duncan to head the agency.
Arme was the CEO of the Chicago school district, arguably the worst school
district in America. His parent’s could not even spell ARMY. The department of
education disposes over a budget of $56 billion and had 5,000 employees in 2006.
Out of every dollar collected in taxes and provided to DE, 75 cents go for
payroll and operational overhead. But that as they say is only the tip of the
iceberg. Un-funded mandates by this federal agency are used like a bludgeon
against local school districts driving the average cost per pupil up by no less
than 40%, which is then translated into an at minimum 20% increase in local
property taxes. Anyone with any common sense would abolish this agen
cy, which is by the way un-constitutional, lay off 5,000 edu-crats, save $56
billion on federal taxes and about $200 billion on local property taxes through
the elimination of un-funded federal mandates. Property taxes would remain about
the same with the elimination of the mandates, and schools run locally by
parents would improve immediately. This would be a win win scenario.
Healthcare in America is a national disgrace. Statistically healthcare costs
beginning in 1972 rose from one billion dollars to 25 billion in 1978. From 1970
to 2004 costs doubled every ten years, to $1.9 trillion in 2004. It has been
estimated that a landslide of paperwork incurs over 40% of healthcare costs
mandated by federal laws, and insurance companies. As in all government run
bureaucracy, operations general overhead costs exceed those of unregulated
business by a factor of two. Fraud especially by hospitals is unprecedented in
imaginary services provided billings to insurance carriers. Worse yet lawyers
who advertise on TV for clients to sue hospitals, doctors and insurance
companies, brings on the liability insurance problem. The economic fix by Obama
is to throw $111 billion at the problem not only will this solve nothing, it
will compound the problem. In fact American healthcare does not need money it
needs tort reform. Obama is a lawyer, the chances of tort reform from
a congress and executive that consists 90% of lawyers will never become a
reality. With a cap on medical law suites, the dismissal of frivolous lawsuits,
which are at minimum 50% of all suits, the cost of medical services would
decline by one third. Requiring less paperwork from healthcare providers could
easily cut another 25% of costs. And shutting down HHS (Health and Human
Services www.hhs.gov ) this agency which is to be given $111 billion on Jan
29/09, did not even have a published budget for 2009. Their Internet site comes
up with empty boxes on a budget form. The HHS budget (2008) was about $700
billion. Which works out to about $2,333.00 per American, including illegals.
Why not simply shut down HHS and provide every American free healthcare. Present
insurance costs per citizen for healthcare are certainly below $ 2,333.00 each.

Our infrastructure has been on a gradual decline for the last 40 years. The last
president that gave it any credence was Eisenhower, with the construction of the
interstate highway system. Obama proposes to provide $90 billion for
infrastructure. This entire issue is bogus. 18.4 % of every consumed gallon of
fuel is federal excise tax. Let’s say that the average fuel price in 2008 was
$2.75 per gal, that works out to $0.50.6 cents per gal. All of those funds go to
the Federal Highway Trust fund, and are then immediately looted by congress and
no one has any idea what they do with the money. We do know that they place an
IOU in the kitty the same as with the Social Security Trust fund. In addition to
this states also add tax. In Florida for example the state adds $0.14.7 cents
and in some counties an additional tax of up to $0.12 cents is added. So on one
lousy gallon of gas, combined taxes on a selling price of $2.75 are $ 0.77.3
cents of taxes on every gallon of fuel. Statisticall
y the United States consumed about 3.34 million barrels of oil. For the sake of
argument let’s assume that each barrel produces about 40 gallons of gas. That
means that federal state and local governments collect about $ 103.2 billion
dollars in taxes, now we have some questions, where the hell is the money and
what was done with it? And how much moneyed IOU’s does the highway trust fund
actually have on their books? Aside from that there does little doubt but that
the entire road infrastructure and RR infrastructure needs an overhaul badly.
This has to be divided into separate funds A) repair and B) new construction.
For 2009 and 2010 only repair should be done and for B) only planning and
permits for begin construction in 2011. Repair should be restricted to RR lines
and track and road of the Interstate system. Allocation of funds for projects
should be controlled on a job-by-job basis and a corps of retired contractors to
assign work in states in which they were never active s
hould identify projects. All funding should come from the Highway trust fund to
which congress should no longer have any access. The aged and disabled should
before anything is done, be means tested. There is so much phony disability
compensation paid out that it staggers the mind. We are personally aware of
scores of disability claims that are completely bogus. The government from the
very beginning has been screwing Social Security recipients. Obama proposes to
spend $ 72 billion on this issue. We do not think this is a realistic figure it
is much too high. All Social Security recipients should see realistic payment
increases commensurate with the real (11) rate of inflation. To legitimize
present recipients every one of them should get a 20% increase immediately.
Welfare payments should be divorced from SS, as should disability compensations.
People who were self employed for long terms of time and paid double SS taxes
should be compensated at higher rates. Healthcare billings a
gainst SS should be based on lifestyle and health. Those who live healthily
active lives should not be punished by those who don’t. All self-induced illness
like smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, and psychotic behavior should not be
covered by SS, or healthcare and be exempt from private insurance coverage.
The proposal of $ 54 billion for energy is an interesting idea, and we know
exactly where to get the funds for that. Shut down the Department of Energy and
you already have saved $25 billion. Of all the government agencies that are
worthless the two most useless are the DOE and the BATF. The annual BATF (12)
budget is 8.12 billion, that leaves us with $ 33.12 billion profit for
shuttering down two worthless agencies.
The idea that government is an active participant in technological development
is a myth originating in academia, which hopes to get a large portion of this
money. $60 billion to universities whose professors are grossly under worked and
massively overpaid and will produce zero middle class or small business
employment is outright stupidity. Consider all the technological advancements of
western civilization of importance and name one that came out of a university.
Roentgen, Edison, Tessla, Krieg and scores of inventors were never connected to
any university. One way of solving this dilemma is to force the return of the
Patent Department back to the way that applications were made in the 60’s where
you could draw up a patent and get it approved without the intermediary lawyer
that has now driven the cost into the thousands of dollars. Another simple way
is to allow corporations accelerated depreciation on machinery used in R&D, and
to write off the entire spent R&D expense, includi
ng relating payroll in the year it was incurred.
Some of the really dumb ideas in the proposed financial stimulus package are:
$335 million for sexually transmitted diseases. Tell the morons to either use a
condom or to keep it in their pants.
$650 million for digital TV conversion boxes, better the idiots read a book and
not watch any TV.
$400 million to study climate change. Brother that’s a boondoggle. How do you
get the sun to reduce solar radiation, which is responsible for 96.5% of climate
change?
$50 million for the National Endowment of the Arts, great let’s buy 25
Stradivarius violins for some of our greater orchestras. This is sure to raise
employment.
$4 billion to expand the war on drugs and the COPS program through Byrne grants,
these were even opposed by Bush. $20 Billion is intended to go for a healthcare

The fact of the matter is that no one in or out of government has been given the
opportunity to review this horrific legislation that the House has already
passed and that has probably not been read in total by any single legislator.
The entire legislation was drawn up by the progressive caucus of the Democrat
party, which purposely kept out all other parties of the political process, and
is nothing less than a huge social engineering project to change the United
States into a socialist hellhole. The bill reflects not only partisan politics
but also a decided group favoritism to social, racial, sexual, and environmental
groups, which are the major backers of the political left. It does not represent
a cross section of America and is directed to the interests of less than 10% of
the American electorate.

But he warned that many technologies were being carried out with the promise of offering a normal life to people, when no one can claim to define what a normal life really is. "This mentality ... tends to consider that there are people who have less value than others," he said, be it because they are less educated, or are disabled, mentally ill or in vegetative states.

Benner also believes these synthetic molecules could give researchers outside-the-box ideas in the search for alien DNA. “Unless it happens to shoot at you with a ray gun, the life that you encounter off of Earth will not necessarily have same biochemistry as us,” Benner said. His research was funded by NASA as a way to find out what life might look like on other planets. Earth-based organisms survive in water, but researchers consider that life on other planets could survive in liquid nitrogen or methane, for example. By using these synthetic chains of created DNA, Benner hopes to find a combination that could survive in those abnormal conditions. It’s a feasibility study to answer the question, “Is it possible for life to exist in conditions that Earth life cannot?”

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The highest-ranking black congressman said Thursday that opposition to the federal stimulus package by southern GOP governors is "a slap in the face of African-Americans."
U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., said he was insulted when the governors of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and his home state, which have large black populations, said they might not accept some of the money from the $787 billion stimulus package.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday he would accept the money, and none of the others has rejected it outright. The Republican governors of Idaho and Alaska also said they had reservations about whether the money would come with too many strings attached, but Clyburn said he was particularly taken aback by southern governors who said they might decline it.
"These four governors represent states that are in the proverbial black belt," Clyburn said.
A spokesman for South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford accused Clyburn of playing the race card.
"Spending money at the federal level that we do not have represents a future tax increase on all South Carolinians, regardless of their color," Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said in an e-mail statement. "And in the process of doing so, he's ripping off everyone he claims to represent."

ALL RIGHT, the baboon. It was stuffed and bespectacled and stood in Madame's parlor, wearing a wing collar, morning coat, and tie, with tucked beneath its hairy arm the manuscript of a lecture on The Origin of Species, the book alleged to document its kinship with humans. Its name, shared with a prominent Darwinian academic, was ``Professor Fiske,'' and it was clearly either setting forth to deliver the lecture or just back from having done so. The place was New York, the time the mid 1870s.
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was then in her forties: ``A short, stout forceful woman, with strong arms, several chins, unruly hair, a determined mouth, and large, liquid, slightly bulging eyes.'' Her father was a military man of the lesser Russian - German nobility, her mother a Russian romantic novelist ``descended from a much grander noble house.'' The mother's gift of overlaying banality with fictions was something the daughter inherited; Helena's sister remembered how she and other younger children had been kept entranced by Helena's way of telling how ``Each of the stuffed animals had taken her in turn into its confidence, had divulged to her the history of its life in previous incarnations or existences.' '

That gift was to become Helena's lifelong resource. At 17 she married a forty-something vice governor named Blavatsky; a few weeks later she fled from him. The story of her next quarter- century is a chaos of improvisations studded with occasional fact. She claimed to have ridden bareback in a circus, toured Serbia as a concert pianist, set up as an itinerant spirit medium. In particular, she would boast that she had traveled alone in Tibet and lived there more than seven years. (Seven years is the prescribed ``period of apprenticeship for candidates seeking initiation into esoteric mysteries.'' ) That was where certain ``Himalayan Masters'' revealed to her what the West still knows as Theosophy. What they had to impart is strangely analogous to what the stuffed animals were divulging decades before: cycles of former lives, and the details thereof.
The strongest argument against Tibetan travel, Mr. Washington suggests, is that ``the breathless, tactless, and massively stout Blavatsky managing to climb steep mountains in brutal weather while concealing herself from trained observers is just too difficult to imagine.'' Far more germane than Tibet is Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803 - 73). Madame Blavatsky paid close attention to his occult works: so much so that her new religion ``was virtually manufactured from his pages.''
By 1875 she was generating Isis Unveiled, thirty-page installments of which she would find on her desk of a morning, written by invisible hands while she slept. Or, ``a Master would take over her body and write for her, unquestionably a help with a book running to half a million words.'' Its influence was easily comparable to that of the Book of Mormon. The Theosophical Society was founded ``almost by accident'' on September 7, 1875. Theosophy ``started from the premise that fundamental truths and values are universal and that all religions are essentially the same religion.'' To impress outsiders, complicated ``phenomena' ' were staged; brooches vanished and rematerialized, dishes broke and were reconstituted. (Matter, you see, is illusion, dominated by spirit.) There were hints of scandal. An accomplice who felt underpaid muttered threats of exposure. By 1884 the Society for Psychical Research (e.g., Ruskin, Gladstone, Tennyson, William James) had decided to look into these Theosophists.
Investigation followed investigation. Nothing final emerged. HPB was by then ``so grotesquely obese that at times she could hardly move, and the combination of illness and fat meant that when she took ship at Madras she had to be hauled on board in a chair attached to a rope and pulley.'' By May 8, 1891, she was dead in London.
And with his book but one quarter finished, Peter Washington is suddenly deprived of a focal figure. In the decades of squabbling that ensued, no one as interesting as HPB would emerge; no one with her genuine aura of mystery, or her occasional sudden candor about the need, now and then, to deceive the imperfectly convinced. Her quarrelsome successors were by contrast straightforward con artists.
An exception was the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925), whose father had hoped to steer him into science. But Rudolf instead ``discovered the great classics of German literature and philosophy in the library of the local doctor, an eccentric figure who diagnosed patients from a moving train as it passed the station platforms on which they were standing.'' Since the doctor never appears in the narrative again, his diagnostic habits are of no relevance; but those last 21 words enshrine a bit of zaniness our author couldn't pass up, perhaps feeling that to compensate for the loss of HPB his book needed all the titters it could muster. There are many such small symptoms. Here's Sir Edwin Lutyens, the architect, present because his wife was a Theosophical fellow-traveler: ``A man of strong tastes with a passion for jokes, his pet hates included long-stemmed glasses, fish knives, cut flowers, silk lampshades, pile carpets, the seaside, statistics, painted nails, the diagonal placing of furniture -- and, of course, religious enthusiasm.' ' Only that last item, clearly, is pertinent here. Or consider how an ex - Secret Service man named Bennett ``experienced a moment of mystical illumination in a cemetery overlooking the Bosporus while recovering from foot-and-mouth disease caught by eating Bulgarian cheese.'' Though it's the content of the illumination that will matter, what we're apt to remember is that cheese disease. Or sometimes a seeming specificity proves shaky. Here's ``Louis Fuller,'' a dancer; readers of Yeats may remember that the name was ``Loie.'' Or ``Amy Semple McPherson'': read, of course, ``Aimee.
What's lacking, I'd say, is a unifying theme. What hunger do exotic religion-substitute s fulfill, then as now? The money the con artists competed for was after all given willingly. Why? The cliche answer is that Science -- i.e., Darwinism -- seemed to have ousted Religion, leaving unfulfilled a hunger to which Science isn't equal. What was needed, then, was an exotic religion, capable of reducing the world of scientific expertise to sheer illusion. That seemed to mean getting rid of matter itself. Christian Science had been one contender. The Theosophy of Tibetan sages was another. Page after page, the narrative of Madame Blavatsky's Baboon is more strongly attracted to the con men than to their disciples, though it's the phenomenon of discipleship, indeed its sheer scale, that keeps tickling one's curiosity. In country after country they were numbered in the thousands. Because of Yeats the theme has been much examined with regard to Ireland; but Yeatsian Ireland is a special case. The Irish Theosophists were generally Anglo-Irish, for whom Irish Catholicism, perceived as arid and mechanical, was no alternative. But how to account for so many British disciples? So many French? German? Swiss?
Mr. Washington (by the way a London resident and the current editor of Everyman's Library) has written a diverting book. There's another book still to be written.

THE GREEN COMET COMETH: From remote Portal, Arizona, astrophotographer Jack Newton reports: "Comet Lulin has brightened considerably and is now an easy naked eye object in dark, country skies." He photographed it using a Meade 14" HyperStar and sends this 16-minute exposure:
Comet Lulin's vivid green atmosphere is about three times as wide as the planet Jupiter, and its dusty tail stretches more than 1.5 million km into space. The comet is so big that "it no longer completely fits in my telescope's field of view," says Newton.
On Feb. 24th, Comet Lulin will swing past Earth only 38 million miles away. Got clouds? No problem. The Coca-Cola Space Science Center in Columbus, Georgia, plans to webcast the encounter. "We're going to transmit the view through our observatory's 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope," says astronomy professor Rosa Williams of Columbus State University. "The webcast begins at 11:30 EST on Monday, Feb. 23rd and will continue until 5 a.m. EST on Tuesday the 24th." Tune in!

SATELLITE DEBRIS UPDATE: US Strategic Command has identified a new batch of fragments from the Feb. 10th satellite collision over northern Siberia. "The count is now at 49 pieces for Iridium 33 and 85 for Kosmos 2251," says Canadian satellite tracker Daniel Deak, who has prepared some 3D maps of the debris for readers of spaceweather.com. Observations: Both satellites are now smeared all the way around Earth; the original orbits are completely populated with fragments. Furthermore, for reasons not fully understood, Kosmos is more widely scattered than Iridium.
"The Kosmos debris ranges in altitude from 260 to 1450 km, so some of the pieces now reach lower than the 350-km orbit of the ISS," points out Deak. "For the Iridium debris, the fragments are confined to orbits between 687 and 1127 km."
This doesn't mean the ISS is in immediate peril. Most of the Kosmos scatter occurs over Antarctic latitudes. For comparison, the ISS stays within 51.6 degrees of Earth's equator, so the dangers are slight. The situation could change, however, as more fragments are identified and their spread increases.
