Any U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative is welcome to dispute these yet undisputed facts. In so doing, however, the American people demand that the evidence be produced: 1 - Barack Hussein Obama has not been vetted or certified eligible to the office of president of the United States by any agency tasked to do so or authorized to do so. 2 - Not one American citizen, not one Senator, not one Representative has seen, touched or examined Barack Hussein Obama’s vault copy Hawaii birth certificate. On October 31, 2008, Dr Chiyome Fukino, Department of Health, Hawaii, issued a press release in which she stated that she had “seen and verified” that a Hawaii birth certificate for Obama did exist; she did not state what was on it nor did she state that it showed that Obama was born in Hawaii. 3 - The Certification of Live Birth (COLB) that Obama has been waving about is not a “birth certificate” as he claims, as the mainstream media claims, as FactCheck.orgFighttheSmears.com claims. The COLB is a short form, computer printed document deriving the information printed thereon from a database of information supposedly (See #13 and #14 below) taken from the original long form vault copy Hawaiian birth certificate. 4 - Factcheck.org claims to be a non-partisan organization. Factcheck.org is funded by the Annenberg Foundation on whose board Obama sat. Factcheck.org is about as non-partisan as is Obama. The Annenberg Foundation has never passed up a chance to fund a “progressive” (a.k.a., Marxist) cause. 5 - Hawaii has a law, HRS 338-17.8, which allows for the birth registration of a child born in a foreign country so long as one parent is a U.S. citizen and so long as that parent claimed Hawaii as his or her permanent residence for one year prior to the birth. Stanley Ann (Dunham) Obama met both of these requirements. 6 - If Obama was born in Hawaii, he is, at best, a dual citizen. At his birth, his father was a British subject as Kenya was a British colony. Dual citizenship precludes Obama from eligibility under Article II, Section 1, United States Constitution. Prior cases decided by the United States Supreme Court, involving the determination of “natural born” have used Vattel’s “The Law of Nations” definition which states, “The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens.” (Part I, Chapter 19, Section 212). Factcheck.org states that Obama was a dual citizen at birth. 7 - If Obama was born in Kenya, he was, at birth, a British subject as Kenya was a British colony. American law, at that time, required that Stanley Ann (Dunham) Obama be a minimum of 19 years of age at his birth to confer to him her American citizenship if he was born outside the United States; she was only 18 years old when Obama was born. 8 - Barack Hussein Obama’s paternal step-grandmother has stated before witnesses, said witnesses signing affidavits, that she was witness to the birth of Obama in Kenya. See here, here, and here. 9 - Michelle Obama has stated that Barack Hussein Obama was adopted by his step-father, Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian citizen. 10 - When Barack Hussein Obama was registered at the Fransiskus Assissi Primary School in Jakarta, Indonesia, his father was listed as Lolo Seotoro; his citizenship as Indonesian; his name as Barry Soetoro. 11 - When Stanley Ann (Dunham) Soetoro divorced Lolo Soetoro in 1980, the divorce papers show they had two children: one minor child (Maya), one over 18 (Barack). 12 - When Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, became an Indonesian citizen, his British citizenship would have been terminated; if he was born in Hawaii, also his American dual citizenship. Indonesia does not allow for dual citizenship. 13 - Returning to the COLB. This document, as waved about by Obama, may be authentic on its face (See #14), but it is not accurate. Were it accurate, it would show Lolo Soetoro as his father; his name as Barry Soetoro. 14 - The COLB Obama waves about lists the race of his biological father as “African.” African is not a race any more than American is. This brings into question the authenticity of the COLB Obama is waving about as his “birth certificate.” 15 - If Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, did become an American citizen, he became a naturalized American citizen which precludes him from eligibility under Article 2, Section 1, United States Constitution. There has been no proof presented that he is even a naturalized American citizen. 16 - Barack Hussein Obama has multiple aliases: Barry Soetoro, Barry Dunham, Barry Obama, Barack Soetoro, Barack Dunham. When he registered with the American Bar Association, he listed none of these as is required by law. Unless he had his name legally changed to Barack Hussein Obama after his adoption, of which there has been no proof presented, Barry Soetoro is his real name and Barack Hussein Obama is an alias. 17 - All his passport records, education records, medical records, birth records have become “not available” to the public. Those records show where he was born, if he applied for or received aid as a foreign student, the country or countries from which he has received passports. 18 - His selective service registration appears to be fraudulent. A second conference has been posted on the docket for the U.S. Supreme Court over the issue of Barack Obama's eligibility to occupy the White House, this one scheduled a week after Congress is to review the Electoral College vote tabulation.

The latest issue posted is a request for an injunction on the election results pending the resolution of a petition for a writ of certiorari filed by attorney Philip J. Berg, a case that is docketed for a similar conference among the justices on Jan. 9.

Berg's original case raises questions about Obama's eligibility and his injunction request first was filed early in December. It was submitted to and rejected by two different justices before it came before Justice Antonin Scalia on Dec. 18. Then just before Christmas the docket was updated to reflect that the motion had been "distributed for conference of January 16, 2009."

On Berg's Obama Crimes.com website, he said Congress is scheduled to hear the Electoral College results on Jan. 8. Then on Jan. 9 there's the conference scheduled on Berg's case itself, with the injunction issue to be addressed a week later.

WND has reported Berg's case, one of the first legal challenges to Obama's eligibility to reach the Supreme Court, alleges he cannot constitutionally be inaugurated.

"I know that Mr. Obama is not a constitutionally qualified natural born citizen and is ineligible to assume the office of president of the United States," Berg said in a statement on his ObamaCrimes.com website.

"Obama knows he is not 'natural born' as he knows where he was born and he knows he was adopted in Indonesia; Obama is an attorney, Harvard Law grad who taught Constitutional law; Obama knows his candidacy is the largest 'hoax' attempted on the citizens of the United States in over 200 years; Obama places our Constitution in a 'crisis' situation; and Obama is in a situation where he can be blackmailed by leaders around the world who know Obama is not qualified," Berg's statement continued.

"The Supreme Court has listed the case of Berg vs. Obama for 'conference' on January 9," the website said.

"I am appalled that the main stream media continues to ignore this issue as we are headed to a 'Constitution Crisis,'" Berg wrote. "There is nothing more important than our U.S. Constitution and it must be enforced. I am concerned that our courts have not yet decided to look into the merits of our allegations."

WND previously reported on a case brought by Cort Wrotnowski. It fell by the wayside when the justices heard about it in conference but refused to give it a further hearing. That was the same fate handed to a case brought by Leo Donofrio. Both challenged Obama on essentially the same issue: allegations that dual citizenship based on a father who was a British subject and a mother who was an American minor disqualified him for office.

The high court previously turned down a request from Berg to stop the Electoral College from selecting the 44th president until Obama documents his eligibility for the office.

As WND has reported, more than a dozen lawsuits have been filed over Obama's eligibility to assume the office of the president, many have been dismissed, while others remain pending.

The cases, in various ways, have alleged Obama does not meet the "natural born citizen" clause of the U.S. Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, which reads, "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President."

Some of the legal challenges have alleged Obama was not born in Hawaii, as he insists, but in Kenya. Obama's American mother, the suits contend, was too young at the time of his birth to confer American citizenship to her son under the law at the time.

Other challenges have focused on Obama's citizenship through his father, a Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of his birth, thus making him a dual citizen. Such cases contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born.

Several details of Obama's past have added twists to the question of his eligibility and citizenship, including his family's move to Indonesia when he was a child, his travel to Pakistan in the '80s when such travel was forbidden to American citizens and conflicting reports from Obama's family about his place of birth.

A partial listing and status update for several of the cases surrounding Obama's eligibility to serve as president is below:

• Philip J. Berg, a Pennsylvania Democrat, demanded that the courts verify Obama's original birth certificate and other documents proving his American citizenship. Supreme Court conferences on the case and its motions are scheduled Jan. 9 and 16.
  


• Leo Donofrio of New Jersey filed a lawsuit claiming Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. His case was considered in conference by the U.S. Supreme Court but denied a full hearing.


• Cort Wrotnowski filed suit against Connecticut's secretary of state, making a similar argument to Donofrio. His case was considered in conference by the U.S. Supreme Court, but was denied a full hearing.


• Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes headlines a list of people filing a suit in California, in a case handled by the United States Justice Foundation, that asks the secretary of state to refuse to allow the state's 55 Electoral College votes to be cast in the 2008 presidential election until Obama verifies his eligibility to hold the office. The case is pending, and lawyers are seeking the public's support.


• Chicago attorney Andy Martin sought legal action requiring Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle to release Obama's vital statistics record. The case was dismissed by Hawaii Circuit Court Judge Bert Ayabe.
  
  
• Lt. Col. Donald Sullivan sought a temporary restraining order to stop the Electoral College vote in North Carolina until Barack Obama's eligibility could be confirmed, alleging doubt about Obama's citizenship. His case was denied.
  
  
• In Ohio, David M. Neal sued to force the secretary of state to request documents from the Federal Elections Commission, the Democratic National Committee, the Ohio Democratic Party and Obama to show the presidential candidate was born in Hawaii. The case was denied.
  
  
• In Washington state, Steven Marquis sued the secretary of state seeking a determination on Obama's citizenship. The case was denied.
  
  
• In Georgia, Rev. Tom Terry asked the state Supreme Court to authenticate Obama's birth certificate. His request for an injuction against Georgia's secretary of state was denied by Georgia Superior Court Judge Jerry W. Baxter.


• California attorney Orly Taitz also has brought a complaint alleging Obama is not a "natural born" citizen and has written an open letter to the Supreme Court asking for the issue to be resolved.


• Pennsylvania attorney James D. Schneller is suing Pennsylvania's secretary of state, Pedro A. Cortes., to prevent transmittal of the certified electoral vote, claiming severe moral consequences and infringement upon even freedom of religion if Obama's eligibility is not established. His case is active before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.


• In Washington state, attorney Stephen Pidgeon is representing 12 plaintiffs in a case that claims to have standing under a unique Washington statute that allows any registered voter to challenge the election of someone who, at the time of the election, was ineligible to hold the office. The suit intends to include a subpoena of Obama's Hawaii birth certificate. The case is scheduled for argument before the Washington Supreme Court on Jan. 8.

Last month, WND reported the worries over a "constitutional crisis" that could be looming over the issue of Obama's citizenship.

"Should Senator Obama be discovered, after he takes office, to be ineligible for the Office of President of the United States of America and, thereby, his election declared void," argues the Alan Keyes case pending in California, "Americans will suffer irreparable harm in that (a) usurper will be sitting as the President of the United States, and none of the treaties, laws, or executive orders signed by him will be valid or legal."

With such high stakes potentially at risk, WND earlier launched a letter campaign to contact Electoral College members and urge them to review the controversy.

That followed a campaign that sent more than 60,000 letters by overnight delivery to the U.S. Supreme Court when one case contesting Obama's eligibility for the Oval Office was pending.

A separate petition, already signed by more than 190,000 also is ongoing asking authorities in the election to seek proof Obama was born in the U.S. or that he fulfills the "natural-born American" clause in the Constitution.

WND senior reporter Jerome Corsi had gone to both Kenya and Hawaii prior to the election to investigate issues surrounding Obama's birth. But his research and discoveries only raised more questions.

The biggest question was why, if a Hawaii birth certificate exists as his campaign has stated, Obama hasn't simply ordered it made available to settle the rumors. The image his campaign posted online has been rejected by critics since it is a "certification of live birth," not a birth certificate, and under Hawaii law at the time such certifications were given to parents of children born outside the state.

The governor's office in Hawaii said there is a valid certificate but rejected requests for access and left ambiguous its origin: Does the certificate on file with the Department of Health indicate a Hawaii birth or was it generated after the Obama family registered a Kenyan birth in Hawaii?

Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro, has named two different Hawaii hospitals where Obama could have been born. There have been other allegations that Obama actually was born in Kenya during a time when his father was a British subject. At one point a Kenyan ambassador said Obama's birthplace in Kenya already was being recognized.

A state agent from the Ohio Department of Agriculture pressured a family whose members run a food cooperative for friends and neighbors to "sell" him a dozen eggs, sparking accusations of entrapment from a lawyer defending the family.

The case brought by state and local authorities against a co-op run by John and Jacqueline Stowers in LaGrange, Ohio, came to a head on Dec. 1 when police officers used SWAT-style tactics to burst into the home, hold family members including children at gunpoint and confiscate the family's personal food supply.

Two organizations, the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund and the Buckeye Institute's legal arm, the Center for Constitutional Law, are working to defend the family.

In an audio podcast posted online, Maurice Thompson of the Buckeye Institute said the family has run the Manna Storehouse, focusing mainly on organic supplies, for several years near Cleveland.

The confrontation began developing several years ago when local health officials demanded the family hold a retail food license in order to run their co-op. Thompson said the family wrote a letter questioning that requirement and asking for evidence that would suggest they were operating a food store and how their private co-op was similar to a WalMart.

The Stowers family members simply "take orders from (co-op) members … then divide up the food," Thompson explained.

"The health inspector didn't like the tone of the letter," Thompson said, and the result was that law enforcement officials planned, staged and carried out the Dec. 1 SWAT-style raid on the family's home.

Thompson said he discussed the developments of the case with the health inspector personally.

"He didn't think the tone of that letter was appropriate, " Thompson said. " I've seen the letter. There's not anything there that's belligerent. "

"Government officials have egos as well. The problem is when government officials have egos, they use the power of government against us," he said.

Thompson explained the genesis of the raid was a series of visits to the family by an undercover agent for the state agriculture agency.

"He showed up (at the Stowers' residence) unannounced one day," Thompson explained, and "pretended" to be interested in purchasing food.

The family explained the co-op was private and they couldn't provide service to the stranger.

The agent then returned another day, stayed for two hours, and explained how he thought his sick mother would be helped by eggs from range-fed chickens to which the Stowers had access.

The family responded that they didn't sell food and couldn't help. When he refused to leave, the family gave him a dozen eggs to hasten his departure, Thompson explained.

Despite protests from the family, the agent left some money on a counter and departed.

On the basis of that transaction, the Stowers were accused of engaging in the retail sale of food, Thompson said.

"You hear people scream entrapment," he said. "But in this instance…"

He said the state agency came from "nowhere" and then worked to get the family involved "in something that might require a license."

Even that remained in dispute, because of a long list of exceptions in the state law, some of which may apply in this case, he said.

The organizations have filed a complaint on behalf of the family naming the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the Lorain County General Health District and the state's attorney general as defendants. A spokeswoman at the Department of Agriculture told WND today she was unable to comment, and officials with the local health agency did not answer WND calls to three different office numbers.

A prosecutor assigned to the case previously declined to respond to WND's request for a comment.

Pete Kennedy of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund said the case was government "overreaching" and was designed more to intimidate and "frighten people into believing that they cannot provide food for themselves."

"This is an example where, once again, the government is trying to deny people their inalienable, fundamental right to produce and consume the foods of their choice," said Gary Cox, general counsel for the FTCLDF. "The purpose of our complaint is to correct that wrong."

In a video posted both on YouTube and on the Buckeye Institute's website, the couple explained how they just wanted to provide a resource for both farmers and consumers.

"We had a sheriff's department group of about 11-12, I don't know, 13 men come into our home. It was violent, it was belligerent, they didn't identify themselves," Jacqueline Stowers said.

She and 10 children were forcibly herded into a room and held there for at least six hours, she said.

"In the meantime we had people with guns inside and outside," she said.

The raid on Manna was not the first such case of authorities invading a home over issues involving the operations of food co-ops and direct producer-to- consumer arrangements. WND reported several months ago when authorities in Pennsylvania demanded $4,000 in fines from a farmer who provided raw milk to friends and neighbors.

That case also was highlighted by a SWAT team-like raid on Mark Nolt's farm, when government agents confiscated tens of thousands of dollars worth of his products as well as pieces of machinery he used for his milk handling and sales.

Online bloggers raged over the situation involving the Stowers.

"Agents began rifling through all of the family's possessions, a task that lasted hours and resulted in a complete upheaval of every private area in the home. Many items were taken that were not listed on the search warrant. The family was not permitted a phone call, and they were not told what crime they were being charged with. They were not read their rights. Over ten thousand dollars worth of food was taken, including the family's personal stock of food for the coming year," said one.

The complaint notes Manna Storehouse deals with wheat, flour, sugar, grass-fed beef, lamb, turkey and eggs from free range chickens, mostly coming from local farmers. Unrest caused by bad economy may require military action, report says --"Pervasive public health emergencies" may require call on military 29 Dec 2008 A U.S. Army War College report warns an economic crisis in the United States could lead to massive civil unrest and the need to call on the military to restore order. Retired Army Lt. Col. Nathan Freir wrote the report "Known Unknowns: Unconventional Strategic Shocks in Defense Strategy Development, " which the Army think tank in Carlisle, Pa., recently released. "Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities ... to defend basic domestic order and human security," the report said, in case of "unforeseen economic collapse," "pervasive public health emergencies, " and "catastrophic natural and human Bushmade disasters," among other possible crises.

Flu watchdog lab planned 'The idea is to strengthen our surveillance against the dreaded bird flu and be ready with a disease control plan if it strikes.' 29 Dec 2008 A surveillance lab to monitor different strains of influenza will be established in Bahrain with the support of the World Health Organisation (WHO). It will be tasked with reviewing the country's action plan in the event of a possible outbreak of bird flu, a top Health Ministry official told the GDN yesterday. The new lab, which will be located at the Public Health Directorate, is the result of a visit by a WHO team last week.

Top Ten US Weather Events of 2008

He is the author of "The Rough Guide to Weather" (second edition, 2007) and "The Rough Guide to Climate Change" (second edition, 2008). (Robert Henson) To paraphrase Charles Dickens, 2008 was the calmest of times and the stormiest of times. In this article, we have recapped some of the highest impact U.S. weather events of the last 12 months. 1. Hurricane Ike (Texas/Louisiana, September). One of the wildest and weirdest hurricanes in recent years, Ike started its career with a bang in the open Atlantic. It intensified from tropical storm to Category 3 status in less than nine hours on 3 September. A few days later, Ike crossed the Caribbean and waltzed across extreme western Cuba as a Cat 3. But Ike's peak winds never regained major-hurricane force. Instead, the system simply got bigger, eventually packing some of the largest radii of hurricane-force winds (125 miles) and tropical-storm force winds (275 miles) ever measured. This posed a major public communication challenge, as the vast swath of wind was expected to stir up a storm surge in the Galveston area far worse than people might presume from the storm's Category 2 rating. The worst of Ike's surge struck less-populated areas just east of Galveston Island on the night of 12-13 September, but the overall damage was still tremendous: more than $30 billion (in inflation-adjusted dollars, that's the third costliest U.S. hurricane on record). Much of Galveston and nearby coastal towns were left in shambles, and storm-surge damage extended well east into Louisiana. Ike resulted in 82 U.S. deaths--among the highest tolls in recent decades--and more than 200 people remain missing in the hurricane's aftermath. The Boston Globe posted an incredible Ike photo gallery. 2. Midwest rains and flooding (Iowa and surrounding states, June). Although El Niño often gets the rap for U.S. flooding, it was a relentless storm track powered by La Niña that focused heavy winter snows and spring rains across a belt roughly from Kansas to Michigan. It all culminated with two weeks of incredible rains centered in two bands, one from central Iowa to southern Wisconsin and another running from eastern Illinois to southern Indiana. Some spots notched more than 14" between June 1 and 15, and a total of 15 stations had their wettest single days on record, gauging anywhere from 4.5" to 9.5" of rain. The resulting floods managed to topple a few of the marks set in the epic 1993 Mississippi flood. The most jaw-dropping imagery came from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where floodwaters spread to an almost-incomprehensible extent. More than 42,000 people were evacuated and some 400 city blocks were inundated as the Cedar River rose nearly a foot above its previous record crest. 3. Hurricane Gustav (Louisiana, September). It threatened to pummel New Orleans with the same or greater ferocity than Katrina did in 2005, but in the end, Gustav--as with many sequels--failed to deliver the punch of the original. Except for a sharp southwest jog in the northern Caribbean, Gustav followed a remarkably straight northwesterly path toward the Louisiana coast. Fears of a Katrina repeat were stoked when Gustav quickly reached Category 4 strength while approaching western Cuba, and people left the Louisiana coastline in droves--the state's largest evacuation in history. But the hurricane never quite recovered from its brief passage over Cuba, and it plowed into the coast at borderline Cat. 2/3 strength near Grand Isle, just far enough west to stave off another New Orleans disaster. Nevertheless, Gustav left an impressive swath of damage well inland, with countless trees and power lines knocked down across Louisiana. In all, 43 U.S. deaths were recorded, along with nearly 100 others in the Caribbean. 4. Super Tuesday tornado outbreak (Midwest and South, February). As if there weren't enough drama in the air as political primaries unfolded nationwide on February 5, nature threw a few tornadoes into the mix--87, to be exact, causing some precincts to close early. The parent storms were sparked by a potent upper-level trough, but perhaps the most unusual ingredient was a large swath of moist, record-warm surface air that swept into place more than a day ahead of time. (More typically in a midwinter outbreak, such air masses race north only hours before storms develop.) Some of the worst damage was near Nashville and Memphis and in star-crossed Jackson, Tennessee, which endured its third major tornado strike following hits in 1999 and 2003. If nothing else, the onslaught is beefing up the city's tornado awareness. Students at Union University dove for cover as dormitories were heavily damaged, but nobody died on campus. All told, though, the tornadoes took 57 lives, making this the deadliest U.S. outbreak since 1985. 5. Winter onslaught across northern tier (Northwest/Midwest/Northeast, December). An unusually potent jet stream brought multiple waves of wintry weather across the northern half of the nation from mid-December toward month's end. The sustained cold was noticeable, if only because recent years have brought so little of it, but frozen precipitation was the real star of this show. The Portland, Oregon, area saw its heaviest snow in 29 years (11-13"), and several Wisconsin cities had their snowiest Decembers on record, less than a year after the state set many seasonal snowfall records. The worst ice storm in New Hampshire's history left thousands of customers without power for days just before the holidays, and hundreds were stranded at snow-crippled airports from Seattle to Chicago. 6. Southeastern US drought slowly abates (ongoing). The year opened with many parts of the Southeast desperate for rain. Atlanta was at the epicenter of the multi-year drought, with Lake Lanier--the city's chief source of water--having just set a record low on December 26, 2007. There wasn't a single dramatic drought-buster, but recurrent fronts managed to douse enough of the Southeast by April to completely erase the region of "exceptional" drought (the most dire category). Slow improvement continued through the year. Today, only a dimple of "extreme" drought remains from northeast Georgia into southwest North Carolina, while many adjacent areas are now drought-free. However, Lake Lanier remains only a foot above its record low and more than 17 feet below full. The northwest flow that dominated the U.S. in the first half of 2008 left much of California high and dry. Many locales, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, reported their driest springs on record. What shocked many observers wasn't the wildfire itself--in a year like this, it's inevitable--but how quickly it arrived and how intensely it raged. A freakish round of low-precipitation thunderstorms swept across the northern half of the state on June 20-21, triggering more than 2,000 fires. Before summer had even gotten going, huge fires were devastating regions from the Big Sur area through much of the forested north. By late July, though, conditions had eased, and the rest of California's fire season was comparatively tame outside of an intense round of wildfires close to L.A. in November. 8. January tornado outbreak (Midwest, South). Even seasoned weather watchers were astounded to see a tornado outbreak so far northwest so early in the year. When twisters strike in January, it's usually in the Deep South, where moisture is plentiful year round. But on January 7-8, the action was focused in Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. There were even two twisters in southern Wisconsin; only one other had been reported in that state in January since records began in 1844. On January 9 and 10, the tornadoes continued, but most were in the more climatologically favored Deep South--except for a true outlier that struck near Vancouver, Washington, making it that state's first-ever January tornado. All told, the outbreak was the nation's second most prolific for January, but only 4 deaths were recorded. 9. Ohio snowstorm (March). Buffered by the Appalachians and the Great Lakes, Ohio gets many types of weather, but seldom in super-strong doses. March 7-8 was the exception that proved the rule, as much of Ohio was hammered by more than a foot of snowfall. Columbus was buried by 20.8", with 15.4" of that total setting a new 24-hour record. The storm was accompanied by strong winds and biting cold, although temperatures and overall hardship across Ohio fell far short of the memorable Blizzard of 1978, when bitter winds of up to 70 mph piled fresh and existing snow into drifts that paralyzed the state for days. 10. Boy Scout and Kansas State tornadoes (June, Iowa). Hundreds of tornadoes ripped across the nation's heartland in the spring of 2008, but one in particular struck me with its poignancy. More than 100 Boy Scouts and staff encamped on a hilly, wooded site north of Omaha found themselves fighting for their lives on June 11 as an EF-3 twister tossed trees and destroyed a cabin where many campers had taken shelter. More than 40 Scouts were injured, but only 4 died, in part due to the quick action of peers who provided first aid. The incident catalyzed fresh debate on the need for dedicated tornado shelters. Less publicized, but just as impressive, was an EF-4 tornado on the same evening that sliced across the campus of Kansas State University, severely damaging several buildings. Afterward, KSU vice president Tom Rawson delivered what has to be the most ironic weather quote of 2008: "The Wind Erosion Lab is gone." Thankfully, the campus was nearly empty and nobody was seriously hurt.
