"All neighborhoods --- and possibly entire coastal communities --- will be inundated during the period of peak storm tide," the National Weather Service wrote in its advisory. "Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single-family one- or two-story homes will face certain death."

The combination of two factors -- the width of Hurricane Ike and the depth of the Gulf of Mexico -- will combine to create a storm surge well in excess of what would normally be associated with a storm of its intensity, according to storm experts.
