Probing an Underground Acid-Mine ...SLATE HILL – No injuries or property damage have been reported this evening as a result of additional tremors at several homes here.
Firefighters and seismologists responded to reports of tremors at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters have returned to the firehouse, but scientists from Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University in New York remain, trying to determine where and why the tremors happened.
Residents reported hearing a “large boom” Friday night. The first quake, with a magnitude 2.3 on the Richter scale, hit at 6:42 p.m. Its epicenter was at the end of Skinner Road, on the west side of the Wallkill River, U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The second quake, at a 1.9 magnitude, happened at 9:18 p.m. Its epicenter was on Turtle Bay Road, on the east side of the Wallkill.
Residents reported several aftershocks between the two measured earthquakes
