To find out what the apocalypse will really look like, Big Think (a progressive online think tank) asked a paleontologist, an astrophysicist, a nuclear terrorism expert, and others about what doomsday might actually be like. The Web site's series, titled "How Will the World Really End?", explores their answers.
And the end of the world seems like a painful one for those on Earth in most of the depictions.
Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics at CUNY, think the universe will end in a big freeze. He postulates that we could avoid our fate with a quick trip to a parallel universe, slipping in "in the same way that Alice entered the looking glass to enter Wonderland."
Others think the end of the world will be bleaker . . . and unavoidable. Peter Ward, a paleontologist from the University of Washington, speculates that the seas could turn to sulfur and decrease the overall levels of oxygen, poisoning us all.
"We now think the big mass extinctions were caused by global anoxia-- the oceans themselves so sluggish that hydrogen sulfide bacteria which was produced in huge areas of the ocean bottom bubble up to the surface and starts killing things."
He also thinks asteroid impacts are imminent, by the way: "We know that we were hit 65 million years ago by a very large rock from space." And we will get hit again, he says, an opinion shared by Edward Sion, an astronomer and astrophysicist from Villanova.
True, the probability is "very, very low," he says, but "one we cannot rule out."
Other potential ends are more esoteric yet somehow less painful. Melissa Franklin, a professor of physics from Harvard University, speculated on what a black hole would do the planet, if for example, CERN's Large Hadron Collider went horribly awry.
"It wouldn't be so bad," Franklin says, noting that the likelihood is incredibly small. But if it the impossible were to occur, it would consume the planet in the blink of an eye.
"It would be fast. It might be an interesting way to go, you wouldn't have a lot of time to worry like in all those apocalyptic films," she chuckled.

Interesting to note about this ‘Death Stars’ ability to throw comets towards the inner parts of our Solar System are the increasing number of them that have been hitting our Sun this year, including one due to hit this very day.

Newly reported observations of gas flows on the solar surface may explain why the sun recently had such an extended case of the doldrums.
From 2008 through the first half of 2009, the sun had a puzzling dearth of sunspots, flares and other storms, extending the usual lull at the end of the 11-year solar activity cycle for an extra 15 months. Findings from the study, which relied on the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, may also suggest a better way to forecast the intensity and duration of future solar cycles.
Better predictions could be critical because some solar outbursts can blast Earth with massive, magnetized clouds of charged particles capable of knocking out electrical power grids and harming communications satellites.
In the March 12 Science, David Hathaway of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., and Lisa Rightmire of the University of Memphis in Tennessee analyzed 13 years of SOHO measurements that tracked the movement of ionized gas from the solar equator to the poles. The researchers found that the relatively slow gas movement, known as the meridional flow, sped up a few years before the last solar minimum began in 2008. What’s more, the flow was substantially faster than the speed at the previous solar minimum, a more typical and less extended downturn in solar activity some 11 years earlier.
Hathaway and Rightmire suggest that the faster meridional flow produced weaker magnetic fields at the sun’s poles, which extended the solar minimum.
Magnetic fields carried by the meridional flow typically oppose much stronger flows of magnetized material on the surface, Hathaway says. The faster the meridional flow is, the greater the opposition is to those other flows. As a result, the sun’s polar magnetic field can’t become as strong, the researchers propose.
“It is possible that the delayed start of the present cycle, 2009 to 2010, was caused by the relatively weak polar field in 2007 to 2009,” comments Neil Sheeley of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
The strength of the magnetic polar fields plays a critical role in determining the onset of the next solar cycle, Hathaway notes. These fields dive beneath the solar surface, building up the deep sunspot-generating magnetic fields that signal the beginning of the next solar cycle. Weaker polar fields take more time to reach the strength required to produce sunspots, prolonging the lull in activity from the previous cycle. In addition, weaker-than-usual polar fields are likely to produce less activity during the subsequent solar cycle, Hathaway and Rightmire predict.
“The fact that the meridional flow plays a key role in setting up the sun’s polar fields for the next cycle suggests that future observations will help us predict [the duration and intensity of] future cycles,” Hathaway says.
One caveat is that physicists have only an incomplete understanding of the solar cycle and the transport of magnetic material below the solar surface, Sheeley says.
“This is certainly an interesting result and may help discriminate between different classes of models of solar magnetism,” notes Natchimuthuk Gopalswamy of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.
Other models, says Hathaway, which also embrace the importance of the meridional flow but rely on the complicated magnetic dynamics that happen below the surface, come to just the opposite conclusion: A fast meridional flow leads to strong polar field and a shorter solar minimum. Those models may now need to be revised, he says.

The solar system has one less comet. On March 12th, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) watched as a comet plunged into the sun and disappeared. Fierce solar heating completely destroyed the icy visitor from the outer solar system. Click on the image to see the comet's last hours:
A newfound comet is heading for a brush with the sun, one which it will likely not survive.
The sun-grazing comet is flying too close to the sun to be visible to the unaided eye, but it shows up clear as day in new sun photos taken by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), according to the website SpaceWeather.com, which reported the find Friday.
Comets that make close passes by the sun are not uncommon.
Astronomers estimate there to be more than 1,600 such icy wanderers making periodic passes through the heart of the solar system. That sun-grazing comet count hit the 1,000-mark in 2005.The comet currently headed for the sun may be part of the so-called Kreutz group of comets, which are known for having orbits that bring them within a few hundred thousand miles of the sun.
All Kreutz comets are thought to be the remains of one giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They are named after 19th century astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first demonstrated that such comets were related.
SOHO is a joint mission by NASA and the European Space Agency. The observatory can see comets as they draw close to the sun because it uses a central disk to block the star's glare in order to see solar weather and other objects nearby.
The SOHO photos have been instrumental in finding sun grazing comets since it was first began observing the sun in 1995.
Before SOHO launched, only 16 sun-grazing comets had been spotted by space-based telescopes, NASA officials have said.

In order for Obama’s “grand plan” of communizing the American people to succeed he has deliberately targeted their middle classes for destruction, and no where is this more evident than in millions of them being thrown from their homes, and as we had previously reported on in our February 16th report “Obama Plot To Throw Millions Of Americans From Homes Uncovered”.
