Avatar is cleaning up at the box office and engendering controversy among political and religious pressure groups. But it's not James Cameron's first foray into the memes of alien identity and interplanetary struggle. In the long run it may not even be the most revealing.
As we'll see in this installment, Cameron's involvement with the remake of the legendary Russian sci-fi film Solaris is rife with strange connections, both real and symbolic. And those connections might be part of a larger story unfolding before our eyes...
Read parts one and two of the Serious Mysteries series for strange semiotic fingerprints linking back to the ancient Nommo, the amphibious mermen who were known by the ancient Babylonians and the modern Dogon people of Africa.After knocking about Hollywood for a while, George Clooney hit the big time in the original ER, created by the late Michael Crichton, who himself is a pretty good candidate for being a product of some alien super-human experimentation program, given his 6'9" height, 560 IQ (give or take), Harvard Medical degree as well as his ten million bestselling books, scientific papers, Hollywood blockbusters, computer games, awards, and on and on and on. Bonus factoids: Crichton was not only a global warming skeptic, but a believer in psychic potential.
In 1993, Clooney starred in Without Warning: Terror in the Towers, a quickie TV movie dealing with the failed WTC bombing of that year. He then played way against type in From Dusk Until Dawn and Batman and Robin, Schumacher's Ice Capades take on Batman that nearly destroyed the franchise -and all future superhero movies- forever.
Then we started seeing Clooney play the kinds of roles we normally associate with him- military, intelligence and military intelligence. In 1997 upon leaving ER he played an Army colonel trying to unravel a nuclear conspiracy in The Peacemaker and played similar roles in Fail Safe and The Thin Red Line.
In 1999's Three Kings, Clooney played a treasure-hunting Army Major looking to smuggle Kuwaiti gold out of Iraq during the first Gulf War who gets caught up fighting against Bush I's betrayal of the Kurds. What's fascinating about this film is the premonition of the hunting for Babylon and Sumerian treasure in the second Gulf War.
Then things get strange. We had the Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou? which is a musical adaptation of The Odyssey. Then he plays a spy chief in the Spy Kids films - and becomes President in the 3D film.
From there we go to another extremely strange film- Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, based on Gong Show/Dating Game creator Chuck Barris' claims that he was a hitman for the CIA (and chalked up 33 hits). Clooney played Barris' handler and Moon's Sam Rockwell played Barris.
Speaking of civil wars, Clooney cast himself as CBS honcho Fred Friendly in Good Night and Good Luck. Friendly was instrumental is taking down the Cohn-McCarthy gang, probably on behalf on elements in the CIA and/or State Department.
Then came Syriana, which we looked at in the last installment, which was obviously part of the not-so-secret war being fought between the CIA (and DIA, NSA, etc) and the neocons during the Bush years, which led to one GOP congressman after another being outed or indicted, and the neocons themselves kicked upstairs to their cushy thinktank gigs.
Bonus alien dreaming sync: Syriana was co-written by Grant Heslov, who guest-starred in 'Via Negativa', one of The X-Files' many Entheogen-themed episodes. Heslov is also a Phi Kappa Psi brother, a fraternity well represented in the military officer corps.
Then was Michael Clayton - a corporate espionage film with a civil war subplot revolving around a thinly-veiled Monsanto stand-in and thick, spicy mythic allegorical subtext, yet another spy film (Burn After Reading, again with Tilda Swinton) and this year's film Up in the Air, where he plays a man who "lives in the sky."
Oh, we're not done yet. He played Lyn Cassidy, Special Forces member of the First Earth Batallion in The Men Who Stare at Goats. It's all played for laughs but something about the whole story has a very strange smell, especially considering there's a Heaven's Gate tie-in to the story. Note also that Major General Stubblevine who gets roasted in the film has questioned the official version of events of 9/11 and was also involved in the Stargate remote viewing project.
Given the resumes of people like Stubblevine, I can only assume First Earth was some kind of distraction/diversion from something. Note also that Steven Lang- the villain in Avatar- plays Stubblevine in Goats. Clooney's latest role is as an assassin named Mr. Butterfly who is "shadow-dweller" (a technical weapons expert who creates and supplies the tools for high-level assassins)." That's quite an interesting resume.
But aside from all of the intelligence operatives he's played, Clooney also has this strong semiotic link to the ocean. He plays a sea captain straight out of Gloucester (that's in the heart of Lovecraft country) in The Perfect Storm. That film is based on a book by Sebastian Junger, a journalist who has a remarkable penchant for showing up in global hotspots.
And then there's Ocean's 11, another espionage film only this time in heist movie drag. Clooney plays Danny Ocean, whose nemesis is Terry (Terra) Benedict (!). Water versus Earth. That was so successful it garnered two sequels.
While on set for Ocean's 11 Clooney saw the Solaris script, which sent Danny Ocean off to the ocean planet where he was initiated into the alien mysteries. Here's where he hooks up with Natascha McElhone, who plays Rheya the alien Earth Mother. So far as I can tell Solaris is the only proper sci-fi film that Clooney's starred in.
What's important to note is that although it's ostensibly a romantic sci-fi film, it can certainly be interpreted as a kind of Body Snatchers horror film. The science officer, Dr. Gordon, is terrified of the visitors and is afraid they could start appearing on earth (which is an important detail given that she's the science officer). That's certainly what we actually see in the film itself, although Soderbergh's interpretation of what we're seeing is different. Cameron's interpretation might be a bit more germane.
THE GOD PARTICLE
Solaris is ostensibly a Soderbergh film, but fits more comfortably in the James Cameron canon, who took a very active hand in the film as producer. Solaris initially looks more like a blue sun in the film than a water planet, begging Sirius comparisons. What's more there's a good chance Solaris had a major influence somewhere along the line on Cameron's Avatar, given its themes of alien identity and a sentient biosphere.
What's even more interesting about this film is that it was the first time I'd heard of the Higgs boson, the "God Particle" which keeps the visitors from disintegrating. But it appears that's the case with us as well, so what all of this might mean is extremely puzzling. The funny thing is that I thought this was just more Star Trek-type technobabble. Obviously not.But it certainly made me pay attention when I started hearing talk about the Higgs boson and the CERN Large Hadron Collider, which came back online just a short time before the premiere of Avatar, itself ripe with themes Cameron first played with in Solaris.
So what are we looking at here? We're looking a film shepherded by James Cameron ripe with Stargate/Sirius resonators, starring George Clooney with his military/intelligence-heavy filmography and Natascha McElhone, Our Lady of Revelations and co-star of Californication, a sex comedy which was just inexplicably invaded by the Sirens/Nommo/Sirians, at least symbolically.
And as reader Astronut notes, the whole scenario of the hibernating Nommo is startingly similar to Lovecraft's fevered mythologies of sleeping, amphibious space gods, and Clooney started his long symbolic association with water/ocean memes smack dab in the middle of Lovecraft country.
Or better yet - smack dab back in James Cameron country. Remember The Abyss? That film seems to have fallen down the memory hole, but you want ocean-dwelling aliens? There they are. Bonus factoids: The Abyss was first released 8/9/89 and runs 171 minutes.
Or how about Cameron's first foray in the wonderful world of IMAX, Aliens of the Deep?
It seems the idea of aliens and the oceans is kind of a thru-line with Mr. Cameron. I was actually surprised to see so little of it in Avatar.
Cameron's rumored to be looking at a film on the bombing of Hiroshima for his next project. Which just tickled me pink, considering we just saw a story on aliens and atom bombs sneak into the mainstream media, appropos of nothing.
But back to Michael Crichton. He wrote a novel called Sphere, in which a telekinetic alien lifeform is first discovered. Where?
In the ocean.
It all ties together so neatly...well, in dream logic fashion, that is.
But how conscious are we, really?

In synch with the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games commencement in just 30 days, we will witness the mystery object (NEO 2010 AL30) pass by Earth today (1.13.2010) !
The object, called 2010 AL30, is set to pass within 76,000 miles (122,000km) of the Earth, or just a third of the distance out to the moon, around lunchtime on Wednesday.
Its discovery earlier this week has baffled scientists, with some astronomers speculating it may be space junk given its width is similar to a man-made object.
Nasa said it was more likely to be a tiny asteroid, one of approximately 2 million such objects in near-Earth space.
Measuring between 33 to 50 feet (10 to 15 meters) wide, experts say it is too small to cause any damage to the earth.
The object, which will pass the earth at 1247 GMT, was discovered by, NASA-funded Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research programme on Monday and pictured by the Australian Skylive-Grove Creek Observatory in Trunkey Creek, New South Wales.
Experts say professional astronomers will be able to see it shining with a brightness of a 14th-magnitude star similar to that of Pluto in the constellations of Orion, Taurus, and Pisces.
Italian scientists Ernesto Guido and Giovanni Sostero, from the Remanzacco Observatory, told Ria Novosti, the Russian News Agency, that it had an orbital period of almost exactly one year and might be a man-made object such as a spent rocket booster.

Aside from the obvious 30 days before the Winter Olympic Games, another interesting timing fact of this object passing Earth (NEO 2010 AL30) is that today (1.13.2010) is also New Year's Eve (12.31.2009) via the old Julian calendar system. The Julian Calendar System and the Gregorian Calendar System (our current and main calendar system used in the "West") are separated by about 13 days.

A rare 17th Century map that shows China as the as the centre of the world went on display yesterday in Washington.
The map, created in 1602 by Italian Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci, was the first in Chinese to show the Americas, and identifies Florida as 'the Land of Flowers'.
The 12ft by 5ft document, printed on six rolls of rice paper, is on show at the Library of Congress. It is one of only two copies in existence in good condition, and was coined 'the impossible black tulip of cartography' by experts strugging to track it down.
The map includes drawings and annotations detailing different regions of the world. Africa was noted to have the world's highest mountain and longest river, while a brief description of North America describes 'humped oxen', wild horses and a region named 'Ka-na-ta'.
Several Central and South American places are also named, including 'Wa-ti-ma-la' (Guatemala), 'Yu-ho-t'ang' (Yucatan) and 'Chih-Li' (Chile).

Ricci also included a brief description of the discovery of the Americas: 'In olden days, nobody had ever known that there were such places as North and South America or Magellanica,' he wrote, citing a name that early mapmakers used for Australia and Antarctica.
'But a hundred years ago, Europeans came sailing in their ships to parts of the sea coast, and so discovered them.'
Ti Bin Zhang of the Chinese Embassy in Washington called the map a 'catalyst for commerce', and that it represented the momentous first meeting of East and West.
Ricci was among the first Westerners to live in what is now Beijing. Known for introducing Western science to China, Ricci created the map at the request of Emperor Wanli.
No examples of the map are known to exist in China, where Ricci was revered and buried. Only a few original copies are known to exist, held by the Vatican's libraries and collectors in France and Japan.
The copy on display at the Library of Congress became the second most expensive rare map ever sold after it was purchased by the James Ford Bell Trust in October for $1million.
The trust also owns the Waldseemuller world map, which was the first to use the name 'America' and was purchased for a staggering $10 million in 2003.
Prior to its sale, the Ricci map had been held by a private collector in Japan. When the Washington exhibition ends in April, it will be housed at the Bell Library at the University of Minnesota.
The library also will create a digital image of the map to be posted online.

Haiti Earthquake Conspiracy, HAARP, EISCAT Experiments on January 12, 2010
The 7.0 Earthquake striking Haiti has destroyed much of The Haitian National Palace and most of Haiti as well. With most living well under the poverty line on $2 a day and one of four living with mud floors, one can only imagine the devastation to a country that was barely hanging on after being hit with four hurricanes. The rich in the cement homes were crushed to death while the poor survived in tents.
Is it nature communicating to Haiti or is it some man made force of destruction that has by some estimates killed half a million people?

Filchner Ice Shelf breaks off, the size of Rhode Island
An area larger than the state of Rhode Island can be seen breaking from the Filchner Ice Shelf in this series of photo-like images from January 12 (The day of the Earthquake) and January 13, 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites captured these images of the ice breaking away from the ice shelf, which numbers among Antarctica’s largest ice shelves. The top image, from the afternoon of January 12, shows only the faintest hint that an iceberg is calving. By the morning of January 13, the icebergs had broken away in a few large pieces. These images are “fish-eye” views of the entire sky taken by the HAARP imager. The imager uses narrow-band interference filters, an image intensifier tube, and a cooled CCD camera to record the spatial distribution of various auroral and atmospheric emissions with very high sensitivity. It can detect optical emissions far below the visual threshold of the human eye. The 6300 angstrom red line results from excitation of atomic oxygen at altitudes of 200-300 kilometers. The 5577 A green line is an emission from atomic oxygen peaking at altitudes of ~110-150 km. Emissions from nitrogen (4278 angstroms) produce blue light at about 100 km altitude.
If these photos weren’t in black and white perhaps we would know what emissions these were. What is that burst of light there? Any ideas?

The experiment will employ both of the Svalbard antennas, together with
three recently installed panel arrays. It is the intention to use the LT4
pulse code, but this will change to the ARCS pulse code if high energy
precipitation studies are required. Use will also be made of the ASK and SIF
optical instruments, which are also located on Svalbard.

A grim report prepared by the Russian Northern Fleet for Prime Minister Putin is stating today that the catastrophic earthquake that has devastated the Island of Haiti was the ‘clear result’ of a United States Navy test of one of its ‘earthquake weapons’ planned to be used by the Americans upon the Persian Nation of Iran but had gone ‘horribly wrong’.
The Northern Fleet has been monitoring US Naval movements and activities in the Caribbean since 2008 when the Americans announced their intention to re-establish their Forth Fleet that had been disbanded in 1950, and which was responded to by the Motherland when later that year a Russian flotilla led by nuclear powered cruiser Peter the Great began their first exercises in this region since the ending of the Cold War.
Though virtually unknown to the American people, the use, and perfection, of earthquake weapon technology has a decade’s long history that began with the former Soviet Unions exploding of a 10 megaton nuclear bomb in September, 1978 and then ‘redirecting’ its shockwave towards Iran where it resulted in a catastrophic 7.4 magnitude earthquake, an event which hastened the downfall of the US backed regime headed by the Shah.

Since the late 1970’s, the United States has ‘greatly advanced’ the state of its earthquake weapons and, according to these reports, now employees devices employing a Tesla Electromagnetic Pulse, Plasma and Sonic technology, along with ‘shockwave bombs’ they have previously been accused by Russia of employing in their war against the Afghan peoples when one of these ‘devices’ was exploded in Afghanistan in March, 2002 triggering a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

Important to note at this point are that modern day experiments seeking to discredit Tesla’s earthquake weapons technology have been directed against structures designed to withstand the effects of earthquakes, buildings which in the early 20th century, like those in Haiti today, were not built to withstand such resonance. Minutes after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti on Tuesday started shaking whole blocks of Port-au-Prince into dust, physicists hundreds of miles away in Illinois knew something terrible had occurred.
The crew operating the particle beam for the Fermilab Tevatron, the world’s highest-energy proton-antiproton collider, hadn’t yet seen images of the toppled buildings; that would come later on the television news. But the squiggles on their computer screens spoke of devastation.
They had seen squiggles like these before–during a 2007 quake in Mexico, a 2006 quake in New Zealand, and earthquakes that triggered deadly tsunamis in Sumatra in 2005 and Indonesia in 2004.
The readings came from sensors on underground magnets that steer particles around the four-mile Tevatron ring. They record vibrations too tiny for people at the laboratory to feel, including seismic waves from distant earthquakes. Big spikes usually mean big trouble somewhere in the world.
A December symmetry magazine article explains how physicists first noticed the Tevatron’s super sensitivity, and how they work to make sure it doesn’t interrupt the laboratory’s multi-million-dollar research efforts.
… The Tevatron has recorded about 20 more earthquakes from all over the globe, including this year’s deadly shocks in Sumatra and Samoa. Only one, a moderate local quake on June 28, 2004, shut the collider down. The tiltmeter recordings look a lot like seismogram squiggles—which makes sense, says US Geological Survey seismologist William Ellsworth, because these sensors are essentially low-resolution seismometers.
The Haiti quake didn’t disrupt the Tevatron beams, though it almost reached the level at which the lab’s two particle detector teams would consider shutting off part of their three-story machines to avoid potential damage. Quakes can jiggle small numbers of particles–less than 1 percent of the beam–out of alignment, as shown in the “abort gap” section of the graphic.
The earthquake’s human toll is estimated at 50,000 dead and three million injured or homeless. CNN.com reports on the need for money to help victims and provides information about several of the not-for-profit charities. Physics Today describes the “perfect storm” that made the quake so deadly.

Amateur astronomers heeded the call of making observations of the small asteroid 2010 AL30, which whizzed by Earth today. Here are some of the great images and videos captured by the amateur astronomy community, which will help the professionals determine the exact orbit, and also perhaps what exactly this unusual asteroid is. The object, which has been estimated to be between 10-15 meters (30 -50 feet) across, is likely a natural object, but it hasn't officially been ruled out that it might be man-made, i.e., a spent rocket booster, from perhaps the Venus Express mission. The folks who are apt to make the determination are those who work with the 70-meter radio dish at Goldstone. I corresponded with Lance Benner from the Goldstone facility, and he said, "We're still working with the data so it's still too early to say."
