At Dragon*Con, I did a dramatic reading from my book, Death from the Skies! which was a lot of fun. I read from Chapter 1, about asteroid and comet impacts, and BABloggee Brandon Alexander recorded it.
After the actual reading I talked about impacts as well as other disasters I cover in the book — including my favorite, gamma-ray bursts. It was a lot of fun, and Brandon posted the video from it as well:

Dramatic reading OF DEATH
On the last day of Dragon*Con — thus guaranteeing me to be tired, brain dead, unfocused, and generally zonked — I gave a dramatic reading from the first chapter of my book Death From the Skies!, which just came out in paperback and so I shilled it without mercy.
Unbeknownst to me, I was being taped. Normally I would object, but since they didn’t catch me scratching anywhere inappropriately, picking my nose, or cursing continuously, I’ll let you take a look.

Artificial ionosphere creates bullseye in the sky
An experiment that fires powerful radio waves into the sky has created a patch of 'artificial ionosphere', mimicking the uppermost portion of Earth's atmosphere. The research has not only caused glowing dots to appear around these patches — it could also provide a new way to bounce radio signals around the globe.
The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), near Gakona, Alaska, has spent nearly two decades using radio waves to probe Earth's magnetic field and ionosphere. One of the most obvious results of the experiments is that they can create lights in the sky that are similar to auroras, the glowing curtains of light that naturally appear in the polar skies when electrons and other charged particles pour down from Earth's protective magnetosphere into the upper atmosphere. There, at an altitude of about 250 kilometres, the charged particles collide with molecules of oxygen and nitrogen and make them emit light, similar to the process inside a fluorescent light bulb.
HAARP's high-frequency radio waves can accelerate electrons in the atmosphere, increasing the energy of their collisions and creating a glow. The technique has previously triggered speckles of light while running at a power of almost 1 megawatt1. But since the facility ramped up to 3.6 megawatts — roughly three times more than a typical broadcast radio transmitter — it has created full-scale artificial auroras that are visible to the naked eye.
Bullseye!
But in February last year, HAARP managed to induce a strange bullseye pattern in the night sky. Instead of the expected fuzzy, doughnut-shaped blob, surprising irregular luminescent bands radiated out from the centre of the bullseye, says Todd Pedersen, a research physicist at the US Air Force Research Laboratory in Massachusetts, who leads the team that ran the experiment at HAARP.
The team modelled how the energy sent skywards from the HAARP antenna array would trigger these odd shapes. They determined that the areas of the bullseye with strange light patterns were in regions of denser, partially ionized gas in the atmosphere, as measured by ground-based high-frequency radar used to track the ionosphere2.
The scientists believe that these dense patches of plasma could be gas that was ionized by the HAARP emissions. "This is the really exciting part — we've made a little artificial piece of ionosphere," Pedersen says.
"The novelty is not seeing the aurora — it's the fact that we can actually create enough high-energy electrons to form plasma," says Mike Kosch, chair of Experimental Space Science at Lancaster University, UK, and a former co-worker of Pedersen's who was not involved in the experiment. "It shows something completely different and new that we hadn't expected. We didn't know we could do that from a radio array on the ground."

Weird, Rare Clouds and the Physics Behind Them
In August, we posted a photograph of some odd, rare clouds known as Morning Glory clouds without providing an explanation for how they form. In response to reader interest, we followed up with meteorologist Roger Smith of the University of Munich, who has studied their formation.
“Over the years we’ve developed a good understanding of them,” Smith said. “It’s no longer a mystery, but still very spectacular.”
The Morning Glory phenomenon is the result of the particular configuration of the land and sea on the Cape York Peninsula, in a remote part of Australia. The peninsula tapers off from about 350 miles wide to 60 miles as it extends north between the Gulf of Carpentaria to the west and the Coral Sea to the east. The easterly trade winds push the sea breeze across the peninsula during the daytime, which meets the sea breeze from the west coast in the late evening. The collision produces a wave disturbance moving inland to the southwest that is a key part of the cloud formation.
As moist sea air is lifted to the crest of the waves, it cools and condensation forms a cloud. Sometimes there is just one wave, but Smith has seen as many as 10 together in a series.
“If you look at the clouds, it looks as if they are rolling backwards,” Smith said. “But in fact the clouds are continuously formed at the leading edge and continuously eroded at the trailing edge. That gives a rolling appearance.”
These clouds do occur elsewhere, including Munich, where they form about once in a decade. Cape York is unique because they happen regularly in the fall above the small town of Burketown. And they can also be particularly impressive there as well, growing up to 600 miles long. Pilots fly into the area every year, hoping to see the intriguing clouds.
Not many scientists study them, or really any weird clouds, because their very rarity makes them relatively unimportant for studying precipitation or climate. So, oftentimes, their formation is poorly understood.
“It’s hard to get funding to study something that’s neat looking,” said cloud physicist Patrick Chuang of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

'Swarm' of Earthquakes Hits Central California

A 'swarm' of 75 quakes (and counting) have hit Central California . Several geologists are concerned it may have an effect on the farther north Cascadia Subduction Zone which begins in Northern California and follows the Pacific coast to Alaska .
This subduction zone has the potential to create mega-quakes which could reach 9.0 magnitude and larger. It has a history of such which in 1700 after a 9.0 earthquake, set off a tsunami which traveled across the Pacific hitting Japan and killing hundreds. If this occurred today, the casualties could be in the hundred of thousands.

There is another swarm of quakes which has been going on for almost three months at the Puerto Rico Trench. This is another area of great concern and also has the potential to create mega-quakes. If a mega-quake occurs in this area, it could set off a tsunami which could hit the United States East Coast.

Devastating Indonesian earthquake 'still to come'
The earthquake which devastated the city of Padang in Sumatra, Indonesia, this week, killing more than 1100 people, may have been only a hint of worse to come. Since 2004, geologists have been predicting a far nastier earthquake in the region – a shallow tremor that will rip the sea floor apart, trigger a devastating tsunami and kill far more people.
"Another earthquake is on its way, and all it will take to trigger it is the pressure of a handshake," says John McCloskey, a seismologist at the Environmental Sciences Research Institute at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, Northern Ireland.
Padang experienced a magnitude-7.6 earthquake on 30 September, just after 5 pm local time. Images of terrified relatives waiting to identify dead bodies, their T-shirts clutched over their noses to mask the stench, military officials stalking between bright yellow, zipped-up body bags and centuries-old Dutch colonial mansions obliterated in an instant have flooded around the world.
At first, geologists assumed this was the earthquake they had predicting for many years. "Padang has bad geology," explains McCloskey. "It sits 40 kilometres above the most earthquake-prone stretch of the interface between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates."
This interface has not experienced the stress relief of an earthquake for over 200 years, according to McCloskey's analysis of historical coral growth rings, which show no sign of seafloor uplift. GPS measurements of the rate of plate motion suggest that there has been around 13 metres of movement in this area over the same period. "A shallow earthquake at the plate interface off Padang is long, long overdue," says McCloskey.
Freak event
Yet the earthquake which struck this week off Padang did not occur at the plate interface, which lies 500 kilometres offshore. The epicentre was just 45 kilometres from Padang, far away from the plate interface. What's more, it originated 80 kilometres underground, far deeper than the place at which the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates crunch together.
Further evidence comes from the orientation of the rupture caused by this week's quake. "The rupture spread in a north-south orientation, rather than east-to-west, as we would expect along the plate interface," says McCloskey.
All the clues add up to the earthquake being a freak rupture of an ancient stressed fracture zone embedded deep within the Indo-Australian plate rather than slippage at the plate interface. "What we're looking at is probably a vestigial crack left over from some distant spreading centre," says McCloskey.
So, what kind of damage will the tsunami-triggering earthquake that the geologists have been predicting near Padang inflict? McCloskey has built computer models of over 125 scenarios in which shallow, powerful earthquakes at the interface off Padang jolt the sea floor, triggering tsunamis. In most, devastating tsunamis are generated. They will reach the city about 30 minutes after the earthquake hits.
His simulations suggest that 25 per cent of tsunamis would be over 5 metres tall as they reached the coast; the highest waves would be 12 metres tall. "In reality, of course, waves will gather height and become more turbulent as they power inland, which means they could be far higher over the city," says McCloskey.
Escape routes
If the people of Padang are well prepared, then most should survive, says McCloskey. Within 30 minutes, the young and the fit should be able to reach the 10-metre elevation contour that rises 2 kilometres back from the coast, he says, which would at least protect them from waves lower than 10 metres.
However, over 100,000 people – a seventh of the city's population – are blocked from running directly to higher ground by the barbed wire-laced, 10-metre-high walls of a huge military airport.
"Padang needs to build a tunnel under that airport, because if they don't these poor people will have to run parallel to the coast for several hundred metres while the tsunami is coming at them," says McCloskey. So far, no steps have been taken to build such an exit route. "Sometimes you despair," he says.
Earthquakes, typhoon leave nations reeling
PADANG PARIAMAN, Indonesia — As the Indonesian army on Saturday finally reached some of the remote areas badly hit by Wednesday's earthquake, authorities said their worst fears were being realized.
As many as four villages have been obliterated by landslides. Overall, the government has confirmed 715 dead, with thousands more missing. The numbers are expected to climb as rescue workers reach even more remote areas cut off by landslides.
In the village of Batu Kalang, Andi waited for rescuers to help him dig through the mud, dirt and tangled trees under which his parents and two siblings were buried. "I'm really angry because the help has been too slow," he said. "It's impossible to find them alive now."
The slow response by Indonesian and international officials, apparently caused by everything from a scarcity of heavy earthmoving equipment to a lack of coordination, left many survivors angry and desperate as they struggled to find loved ones.
Hopes of finding survivors began to fade Saturday, even as large numbers of international aid workers poured into the area — three days after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the western coast of Indonesia.
Rustam Pakaya, the director of crisis management for Indonesia's Health Ministry, said no more living patients were arriving at the city of Padang's main hospital.
The United Nations estimated that the death toll stood at more than 1,000. The chaotic environment makes pinpointing the number difficult.

6 Natural Disasters That Were Caused by Human StupidityOn Saturday afternoon, despondent rescue workers said they were beginning to lose hope of finding anyone alive.
"With every hour, it gets less and less likely," said Nino Rozano, an Indonesian rescue worker with experience in several disasters. "I once found someone alive after five days, though, so I suppose there is still hope."
Rozano said the coordination of rescue crews during the first few days had been a disaster in itself.
He said numerous teams — from Switzerland, Japan, Indonesia and the United States — were working at the site with no clear person or group in charge.
Meanwhile, in Samoa and American Samoa, Tuesday's earthquake and tsunami are believed to have decimated centuries of culture on the two islands that are steeped in tradition. In Samoa, the government has proposed a mass funeral and burial this week.
"I'm not sure the word 'shock' fully describes our sense of loss," said Ben Taufua, whose family in another Samoan village had to bury seven relatives in a hastily dug grave. "Nothing makes sense at all. ... The beach where all of this happened, all those lives were lost, it was paradise on Earth."
The death toll from rose to 170, including 129 in Samoa, 32 in American Samoa and nine in Tonga, while aid efforts continued.
In the Philippines on Saturday, powerful winds toppled power poles and trees in the northern portion of the nation as the second typhoon in eight days bore down.
Heavy rain was falling across a swath of the main island of Luzon that is still flooded from the earlier typhoon, and violent winds were battering far-north provinces.

250 dead, 2.5M homeless after floods in India
HYDERABAD, India - About 2.5 million people crammed into temporary relief shelters after floods triggered by torrential rains tore down their homes in southern India over the last week and killed some 250 people, officials said on Monday.
Most of the deaths were reported from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh state where rivers topped or breached their embankments. Some deaths occurred in the western Maharashtra state.
The flooding, described by officials as worst in many decades in south India, swamped millions of acres of cropland, including sugarcane plantations, prompting worries of a fall in sugar output in Karnataka, the country's third-biggest producer.
Officials and relief agencies said more than five million people had been affected by the flooding and were now sheltered in over 1,200 temporary camps. They included about 2.5 million people from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh who lost their homes.
"These are the worst floods in 100 years," said Dharmana Prasada Rao, Andhra Pradesh's minister for revenue and relief.
It has been determined that in the period of solar activity increase (11-year

“Could this be related to what is going on in Phoenix? I noticed both the concrete structures that go in the ground as well as some plastic coffin liners. Could it be a regular expansion of the cemetery? It seems to be an operation of a smaller scale than what is going on in Phoenix, or perhaps I am late and many of the concrete structures are already in the ground and covered up,” a reader noted in an email sent with photo attachments.
On March 25, Infowars posted a report filed by Shepard Ambellas on an apparent mass grave site under construction at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona.
In February, Infowars reposted a report by D. H. Williams of the Daily Newscaster revealed a meeting between Indiana county municipal officials in the vicinity of Chicago and officials with FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security. According to Williams’ sources, DHS and FEMA officials presented several scenarios, including the need for mass graves.
The Real Reasons Behind Fed Secrecy
Last week I was very pleased that the Financial Services Committee held a hearing on the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, HR 1207. The bill has 295 cosponsors and there is also strong support for the companion bill in the Senate. This hearing was a major step forward in getting the bill passed.
I was pleased that the hearing was well-attended, especially considering that it was held on a Friday at nine o’clock in the morning! I have been talking about the immense, unchecked power of the Federal Reserve for many years, while the attention of Congress was always on other things. It was gratifying to see my colleagues asking probing questions and demonstrating genuine concern about this important issue as well.
The witness testifying in favor of HR 1207 made some very strong points, which was no surprise considering the bill is simply common sense. It was also no surprise that the witness testifying against the bill had no good arguments as to why a full audit should not be conducted promptly. He attempted to make the case that the fed is already sufficiently accountable to Congress and that the current auditing policy is adequate. The fact is that the Fed comes to Congress and talks about only what it wants to talk about, and the GAO audits only what the current laws allow to be audited. The really important things however, are off limits. There are no convincing arguments that it is in the best interests of the American people for anything the Fed does to be off limits.
It has been argued that full disclosure of details of funding facilities like TALF and PDCF that enabled massive bailouts of Wall Street would damage the financial position of those firms and destabilize the economy. In other words, if the American people knew how rotten the books were at those banks and how terribly they messed up, they would never willingly invest in them, and they would fail. Failure is not an option for friends of the Fed. Therefore, the funds must be stolen from the people in the dark of night. This is not how a free country works. This is not how free markets work. That is crony corporatism and instead of being a force for economic stabilization, it totally undermines it.
If the Fed gave its actual arguments against a full audit, they would not have mentioned anything about political independence or economic stability. Instead they would admit they don’t want to be audited because they enjoy their current situation too much. Under the guise of currency control, they are able to help out powerful allies on Wall Street, in exchange for lucrative jobs or who-knows-what favors later on. An audit would expose the Fed as a massive fraud perpetrated on this country, enriching a privileged few bankers at the top of our economic food chain, and leaving the rest of us with massively devalued dollars which we are forced to use by law. An audit would make people realize that, while Bernie Madoff defrauded a lot of investors for a lot of money, the Fed has defrauded every one of us by destroying the value of our money. An honest and full accounting of how the money system really works in this country would mean there is not much of a chance the American people would stand for it anymore.

The more I read about this man, the more I like him. As the KOS diary points to, the St. Petersburg Times published a lengthy profile of Congressman Grayson and here are a few portions that I thought were worth sharing.

Author Arundhati Roy on the Human Costs of India’s Economic Growth, the View of Obama from New Delhi, and Escalating US Attacks in Af-Pak
We’re joined from the Indian capital of New Delhi by the Booker Prize-winning novelist, political essayist and global justice activist Arundhati Roy. Her books include the Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things and her latest essay collection, Field Notes on Democracy: Listening to Grasshoppers. We speak to Roy about India’s conflict with Maoist rebels, the occupation of Kashmir, ongoing Indian-Pakistani tensions, Obama’s war in “Af-Pak,” and more.

A scam of planetary proportions?
Inside the Planet Aid scandal

These days, the only thing related to Planet Aid that could outpace the spread of its bright yellow, used-clothing collection boxes is the growing number of media reports revealing the charity’s dubious practices and ties to a shadowy global conglomerate whose leadership has been indicted for fraud and accused of running a secular cult.

The GAIA Movement, USA
Founded in 1997, Massachusetts-based Planet Aid is a registered non-profit that purports to support education and development projects in third-world countries, primarily in Africa. It does so by selling used clothing and shoes collected from over 7,000 metallic boxes placed in the parking lots of supermarkets, convenience stores, laundromats and other locations in 19 states.
Planet Aid began placing boxes in southern Maine about five years ago; there are currently about 20 boxes in the greater Portland area, four or five in Portland proper. As the Kennebec Journal reported in January, Planet Aid has expanded much more aggressively in central and northern Maine, beginning last year. It opened a warehouse in Gardiner and has about 100 boxes in the region, one of the organization’s managers told the paper.
Much of the negative press coverage Planet Aid has gotten from American media outlets was sparked by a 2006 report by the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP), an independent, non-profit watchdog group based in Chicago. An examination of Planet Aid’s 2004 tax filings revealed that it spent $2 million on “International Aid,” but $6.6 million on expenses related to “Clothing collection.”
AIP estimated that, overall, Planet Aid spent just 23 percent of its revenue that year on programs for the poor. The grade it gave the charity: F. (The institute believes non-profits should spend at least 60 percent of their revenue on charitable programs.)
Put another way, if you drop four sweaters into a Planet Aid box, the proceeds from the sale of one of them would go to help fund a project in the developing world; the other three would be sold to help Planet Aid collect and sell more sweaters.
Planet Aid disputes AIP’s assessment on grounds that the collection and resale of clothing is part of its charitable mission because recycling clothes benefits the environment (fewer items end up in landfills and incinerators, less energy is spent to manufacture textiles, etc.).

Glenn Beck Warns Next 9/11 Will Initiate Reichstag Event
Media phenomenon Glenn Beck recently sat down with Newsmax for an exclusive interview offering his take on everything from President Obama, to the threat to talk radio and even a worry that our Constitutional government may disappear after a "Reichstag" event takes place. Beck, who is also thriving on the radio, in bookstores and on the comedy circuit, sat down with Newsmax magazine's Editor in Chief Christopher Ruddy and voiced his concerns about a coming attack on talk radio. But his real worry is that many Washington elitists really don't like our form of government and want to see it abolished. "I fear a Reichstag moment," he said, referring to the 1933 burning of Germany's parliament building in Berlin that the Nazis blamed on communists and Hitler used as an excuse to suspend constitutional liberties and consolidate power. "God forbid, another 9/11. Something that will turn this machine on, and power will be seized and voices will be silenced." Beck has also been a fierce critic of President Obama. Still, he said he's open to a meeting with Obama. Beck doesn't believe the president "necessarily would" speak directly to him, adding: "I don't know very many politicians that speak directly."
Disintegrating Set Of Morals Allowing American Cops To Become The Gestapo And Stormtroopers Of Yesterday
U.S. media outlets are writing about the new LRAD or “audio cannon” device used on demonstrators Thursday at the G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh in a way that only brain-dead sold out scoundrels can. LRAD stands for “Long Range Acoustic Device” and the name does not betray the weapon’s objective. It is a “hands off” tool that blasts out an extremely high pitched sound. I wouldn’t be surprised if it actually has the ability to drive people stark raving mad. It’s a futuristic fascism device if described accurately. Americans, especially journalists writing about this, should be horrified by this new form of police abuse. I predict that it will ultimately be the last straw in a society that has too high of a threshold for this type of torture. The device disburses crowds by emitting a high decibel sound so painful that it causes people to freeze and try to run. Apparently they can not always do this.
US spontaneous human combustion raygun video released
In a recent test at the White Sands Missile Range, a specially equipped C-130 plane fried a parked truck with a powerful laser. And while we still haven't seen evidence of the laser "defeating" a ground target, as Boeing puts it, a video of it scorching a direct hit on the hood of a truck is still pretty amazing.
As you can see, the laser beam burns right through the truck's hood, and then through the engine, "defeating" the vehicle. Called the "Advanced Tactical Laser" (ATL), this is the first time the megawatt-powered chemical laser has been used to engage a target in a combat simulation situation.
Now, to be fair, the car was parked by itself in the middle of the desert. So unless we've got a clean shot at Al-Qaeda's parking lot, the beam isn't ready for prime time. Plus, last year the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board said that "the Advanced Tactical Laser testbed has no operational utility."
Despite those reservations, Boeing is still confident that the laser will soon provide a weapon that can take out a target with little or no collateral damage.
Wi-Fi Signals Used To See Through Walls
Researchers from the University of Utah have found a way of harnessing Wi-Fi signals to see through walls. The researchers say that the variation of radio signals in a wireless network can reveal the movements of people behind closed doors or even a wall. Joey Wilson and Neal Patwari, from the University of Utah, have used the principle of variance-based radio tomographic imaging. The system works by measuring interference between the nodes of wireless devices. If someone passes through that field, the device registers a change in the levels of resistance, and feeds that information back to a computer. The system can currently only see about three feet through a wall, and is so far only capable of sensing motion. At this stage, it is not sophisticated enough to generate an actual image of what lies beyond the wall, but the research team is confident that this feature could be developed in time.
Boosting a Brain Wave Makes People Go Slo-Mo
Researchers have found that manipulating a particular brain wave can force human subjects to move more slowly, and provided some of the first evidence of how brain waves can directly affect behavior.
A group of 14 volunteers received brain stimulation as they tried to manipulate the position of a spot on a computer screen with a joystick. That stimulation led to a 10 percent drop in execution of the computer task.

The DeKalb County Fairgrounds play host to a number of events, including and especially the DeKalb County Fair at the end of September. Other events it hosts include such diverse activities as flea markets, fundraisers, and auctions, as well as the usual 4-H and local agricultural shows.
The DeKalb County Fair is always the last week in September, and features a street fair, a small "carnival", a series of merchant tents (which seems to grow every year!), and, of course, the actual COUNTY FAIR. The Fair itself has the usual 4-H livestock shows and judgings, as well as demonstrations of skill in handling horses, training dogs, and shows.
I'm sure that somewhere in there, there are also pie tastings, but if you don't see any, there ARE several people selling pies, cakes, and other tasty goodies at their merchant spot. The best pie In The World is sold at the Chapel Chili stand, where apparently Angels moonlight,
