Radioactive Device Stolen from Forest Lake in Minnesota

A device containing radioactive materials stolen Wednesday night in Forest Lake poses little risk to the public, authorities say. Nevertheless, they're alerting the public: Don't try to use it. Don't mess with it. Just call us.

The device, called a Troxler gauge, was taken out of a pickup truck belonging to an employee of Asset Management Engineering Inc., the Forest Lake construction-engineering firm that owns it. The truck was parked near the employee's house.

Construction firms deploy the gauge when they work on roads and buildings. It uses sealed radiation sources to measure the moisture content and density of soil and building materials.

State Department of Health officials say the device does not pose a health hazard
