At North American summit, Bush stands firm on passports
OTTAWA, Canada – President Bush stood firm yesterday on an issue causing friction with Mexico and Canada, refusing to back away from plans to demand passports from everyone entering the United States across its land borders beginning in 2008. The president's stand came on the opening day of his annual summit with the leaders of both neighboring countries. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper told Bush that the passport requirement will hurt cross-border commerce and cripple tourism. “We are committed to implementing it in a reasonable way,” said Dan Fisk, senior director for western hemisphere affairs for the U.S. National Security Council.
