A mile-long backup on Highway 18 between Waterman Canyon Road and the 4,000-foot elevation marker Friday wasn't caused by an accident on the winding road. It was a fireworks checkpoint. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and Fire Department organized the checkpoint with county Board of Supervisors Chairman Paul Biane to help keep fireworks out of the mountains.
